Purple/red stem & yellowed new growth

Guest

I grow in potting soil and...
This probem i've had for a while. When plants are done filling in the medium/container. I start getting purple/red colored stems, then follows the yellowing of new growth. Is it just root bound or, i was thinking maybe try some Cal-Mag... I don't know. It might also be ph? or salt build up? i just can't pin it down...
Any thoughts on this would be great!!

Hey there GreenLion, Nitrogen deficiency is the most common and make plants grow slower.. Older leaves turn yellow between veins and stem/veins can turn redish/purple.. Some more info would help though, ph/ec etc.. My first post on IC :woohoo: far from my first grow though..

Good luck with your plants

Hey GL,

I'd say ignore the purple stems and focus on the yellowing. As most of us have already read, purple stems can be genetics.

Now - the yellowing... First I'd ask if it's starting at the bottom and working its way up, or is it affecting new growth. This will tell you whether it is a mobile or immobile nute causing the prob.

If on new growth (striping effect) then it's most likely Cal-Mag related and could be caused by pH lockout or just not enough Cal-Mg.

If on older growth than you're looking at N being the culprit and chances or it's just a lack of N rather than pH lockout (unless your pH is way off).

Typically, if ya keep your pH in check and make sure you're feedin her, it'll solve itself.

ya i agree with kluter i get purple stems on my tainwreck x w.w. and not on several other cuts with same feeding....and yellowing can be calmag or nit. it was both for me mainly calmag

genetics give you purple stems, but it isnt common unless you have a dific or lock out from fluctuations of PH or too heavy of feeds. I would recommend a good flush of ph'ed water and focus on your ph as well as your TDS. If your rootbound and your not allowing any runnoff, you may be suffering from salt build up. again.. flush flush flush and keep an eye on your levels.

A transplant with new rich soil never hurts if the roots are root bound after observation. I suggest using a little bat guano which should correct the yellowing. Perhaps many of your micro nutrients are off as many people only think of NPK. Keep it simple and make some slight changes to see what results are working in your favor. Success.

My stems purple when the plant is ready to harvest. This could be many things Rootbound, Stress,.........The more info you give the more apt somone can give an answer that is spot on.
