"This is the line where you can look for the more colorful Malawis, with shorter flowering times and better adaptability to colder climates."

how far north has the purple pheno of malawi been successfully ripened??

i see violetta can be successfully ripened until 47 north, is this cross PCK dom in that respect?

i have some Purple Malawi crossed with a accilimtized local variety here at 50... hoping for the best!

I guess it depends on how soon you can get it to start flowering.....and whether you can catch a break with the weather in October.
From the beginning of the statement you quoted:
"Purple Malawi (P2): This is the mother of our Violeta hybrid. It's a colorful rare pheno found in the first Malawi feminized release. It's more compact than the green Malawis, but still displaying an excellent branching, and accepts the Nitrogen better. It's an interesting pheno due to its shorter flowering time of 10-11 weeks.."
Hopefully you can get it to flower at least 12 weeks before Oct 14th.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Good luck!:tiphat:

You could always pull a tarp and light deprive to initiate flowering . This way it peaks when temps etc are the best. Just a few weeks can make a huge difference . Peace sdd

I tried my purple Malawi at 44N last year and there was pretty much no chance. It didn't start flowering by the middle of September so i brought it inside. It would have been December before I would have harvested that plant. I popped it in June. Perhaps if it was a more mature plant things would have been different?

Hard to say what your hybrid will do but there's only one way to find out I guess.

The more northern the latitude the less the amount and intensity of sunlight, especially after the Autumn equinox...I reckon the deduction is obvious...

Hi OnceUpon,

Yes, it's hard to predict how your purple malawi cross will work there without knowing more about the other strain used in your cross and without having more references about how your hybrid performs in your latitude or similar climate.

Latitude variable is also relative as it also depends if you are growing in a continental or coastal climate, lowland or in the mountains, special micro climates etc ....

What i know for sure is that straight Purple Malawi pheno can be grown without any problems here at 37º latitude in a lowland coastal climate. I have seen purple malawi plants finishing properly also in much more continental climates around 43º latitude.
Purple Malawi has quite good mold and cold resistance (much better than green malawi phenos), so it can probably be finished even in more northern locations but i like to be quite conservative with the latitude limits in our strain descriptions.

Violeta (which is indeed very purple PCK dominant) would be a much better choice for your latitude.
