i have them also, thought they were thrips. i used some bayer complete insect dust for gardens on the top of the media afer spraying them with cutter bug free backyard concentrate. i also have bti dunks in the reserve that they were apparently immune to.
the spray and dust seems to have worked for now, its been almost two weeks.

I know this is an old thread but I want to give it a bump to see if "springtails" is the consensus. I have some small bugs that are white and almost pearlescent. They like to hop around and can jump about 3 inches. They are hanging out under my pots and I have seen some of them in and around the drainage holes. They also like to hang anywhere that there is some standing water like a small spot of it under a drainage dish. They are very small but still visible to the naked eye. I saw one under my 100x radio shack magnifier but it was hard to make out since I crushed it first. Couple of black eyes, shiny, white body, couple antenna, I dunno, he looked pretty fucked up from the beating I gave him..... :joint: Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

i had them aswell i seen them in the soil when i watered did not do any visible harm and thats what i think they were springtails they would not even be 1 mm long here is a picture of 1 i caught

Thanks Southwind, good lookin' out.

Edit: Just an update. I have nothing on hand to really deal with these little pests right now so I threw a couple Hot Shot No Pest Strips in there. Did a test run with a catch pan that had a bunch of those little buggers in there, threw a no pest strip in the pan, put another upside down on top of it (so they couldn't escape), waited like 1 minute or so, popped the upside down pan off and only found a few still scurrying around so it appears as though these have the ability to kill them.

I hooked up my vent fan to the strip that goes on and off with my lights so that I'll have 12 hours a day with the fan off. Hopefully that'll be enough time to do some damage to these bugs and hopefully my humidity can stay in check like this. Normally I run that ventilation fan 24/7 so I'll keep a close eye on the levels for the next few days. I'll update this thread after a week or so I can let anyone know in the future whether or not we have an easy solution to these bugs.

Alright, so here's my update. The humidity did not stay in check with the fan off for 12 hours so now I run it (during lights off) 1/2 hour on 1 hour off. The No Pest strips killed off most of the population. I still see a couple here and there in a moist saucer but nothing big. I'll keep the No Pest strips in there another couple weeks and see if they completely disappear. Hope this helps someone.

I for one am making note of your results. Thank you for taking the time to let us know what your results were. I NOTICED IT AND APPRECIATE IT.

Hey, just one more final update. I've kept the pest strips in there but will now be removing them. I can't find a springtail and haven't been able to in a while so again, the no pest strips are a very effective means for control.

Hey guys I know this is an old thread, but I think I have a springtail problem...well not really problem BUT I think I have some in my garden. The other day I saw 2 small white looking "mite" type bugs jumping around in my drain pan in the drainage water. I only spotted 2 and haven't seen any others since. Do they ONLY reside in the water/soil? If they are in the soil would I get some kind of treatment that I would feed my girls directly into the soil?(as opposed to foliar feeding ect.)? Also since I've only seen 2 are these little bugs something to worry about, and should I wait to take action against them UNTIL I see more, since I've only seen 2? Or should I try to do something about it now?

Hey sniffs, better to ask in this "old thread" than to start a new one. I'm tired of looking through 20 threads on the same subject when I need an answer. On to the springtails....I don't believe that they caused any damage to my plants so it's your call what you want to do about them but they do for sure hang out in the soil, at least when it's moist. I've seen them crawling around the drain holes when I had a problem with them. I don't know if there is anything you can do to kill them while in soil but those no pest strips seemed to do a great job eliminating them for me. Despite the fact that they shouldn't cause problems I just don't like bugs hangin' 'round my grow room so I showed them who is boss in garden.....ME! Good luck.

Hey GrassRoots, thanks for helping me sort out a pest of a problem, these little springtails. They say some species can nibble on roots so I'm throwing up some No Pest Strips tomorrow.

No problem mikessong. Who did you hear about the root nibbling from? So far I hadn't heard or read that but if you've got some info on it paste it to the thread to help people out in the future. Thanks man! Those pest strips will fuck those little guys up, enjoy the carnage!
