Well just thought I'd share my story from the other day, so I'm driving down a main road where I live and pass a state trooper going the opposite direction about 50mph. I wasnt speeding or anything but my windows are illegally tinted and I drive a car that is easily profiled (black suv) so I'm not going to pretend like I wasnt expecting it but he flipped a bitch and got behind me pulling me over in a parking lot. So he comes out and goes through the routine of pulling out the meter and measuring my tint, then asks me to come sit in his car while he writes out the tickets. I dont mind at all and understand the whole process of being a cop so I'm trying to be as accommodating as possible doing what he says trying to get out of there. So I figured I was pretty much done with it all but should have known better. He asks whether or not there is anything illegal/weapons in the car etc. I tell him no and he then asks if I had "marijuana" in the car ( btw why do cops have to still say stupid terms for drugs.... never been asked wheres the bud by the cops). I tell the cop that no I dont have anything in the car, and sure enough he doesnt believe me and asks to search my car. **a little fyi I know there wasnt anything in the car and at absolute worse MAYBE a random tiny stem or paraphernalia stashed somewhere, BUT I was high as shit lol, so I was pretty nervous and you could see me breathing heavy/ heartbeat through my shirt, which is somewhat normal for me anyway.
Anyway I tell him no, you cannot search my car. We go back and forth with the whole "why do you not want me to search your car" me saying "because I have the right to" he says alright and goes into some further explanation of how he thinks theres stuff in the car and he's going to give me some time to think about not letting him search if i want to change my mind or whatever. I dont budge at all and at this point understand I'm in for the long haul but I'm also not the type to let authority figures walk all over me because they think they can. He sits there for a minute and then does the inevitable and calls for a k9, turns out the closest one is a couple counties away. He then calls the local city cops and turns out they dont have one on duty at the time!! So now we've gone through this whole escapade with me telling him "honestly sir, there is nothing in the vehicle at all, I'm just not giving you permission to search it" much to his frustration and the cherry on top of the cake was no available k9. So he writes me my citations and tries to feed me some bs about health from smoking, then says "guess today is your lucky day".....
it's funny to look back on but at the time I was nervous as hell, it's easy to understand how police push people into corners by using their authority. Yes they do need to use this power but way too often and I couldnt help but feel like I was doing something wrong just because I exercised my rights, guess they arnt used to that.
