PSU (pc power supply) not powering fans?

I plug in a fan (have tried several) to a PSU and nothing happens. Is there some wires I need to cross to ac tivate the fan or PSU after I plug the PSU in the wall?

I'm a little lost here...

edit:

PSU works fine, I have 2 and both are computer usage tested. one is rated 150 watts, the other 250.

I don't know if there has to be a hard drive or something else connected to get them to power a fan? a sensor? what do most people do?

You need to jumper certain pins to get a PSU to power up in standalone mode. I think it's pins 4 & 5 on an ATX, but not positive off the top of my head.

thank you ScrubNinja, problem solved

I ran a search for PSU fan
then another for power supply fan
and PC fan

none of them turned up that link, so I appreciate your digging
