Alot of ppl use proxys it's a safer way to do things. Look into useig encryption. Thats what me and my co-workers use to keep our data safe. I've gotten so much great information on this site. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I always visit this site and other similar ones using a proxy. I mostly use the proxy when I am participating (posting pictures or writing in threads), as opposed to just reading or looking at pictures, since it slows things down. I also set my browser to "private browsing" so there will be no record of my visiting those sites on my computer. It's probably overkill, but being paranoid isn't always a bad thing.

There are different kinds of proxies, some easy to use and some more complicated. Some have limited functionality, and some let you do anything you normally would. Some free, and some paid. Do a search for proxies on this site, and you should find all the information and references you need.

A lot of people seem to recommend Vidalia / Privoxy / Tor, which I've used for a few years. I think it works alright, if enough servers are online to deal with the traffic. It is slow, though.

I may try a paid proxy service, but haven't yet found one I trust. Any specific recommendations on paid proxy services?

edit: OK, I searched all by myself for a minute here:

How do you set it up for "private browseing"? What browser do you use?
I use Safari on Mac, although there is also a Windows version. Private browsing is an option under the Safari menu (on Mac). It gets reset every time you quit the browser, so must be turned on whenever you need it. According to Apple Help:

When private browsing is turned on:

■ Webpages are not added to the history list.
■ The Downloads window is cleared so the name of anything you downloaded won’t appear in the list. (To get rid of the downloaded item itself, you must delete it.)
■ Information isn’t saved for AutoFill, including names and passwords.
■ Searches are not added to the pop-up menu in the Google search field.
■ Cookies are deleted.

Please note, this is not the same as using a proxy. Private browsing just keeps your computer clean. A proxy hides your identity from sites you visit. Two very different things. I don't use other browsers very often, so don't know if others have such an option.

Well what about regular PC's? Personally I hate MACs but I don't want to start a debate on that subject haha. So using Windows Vista what are some options?

Its always cool to be behind a proxy when cannabis is around :D . Try "Xb Browser" (formerly Torpak). Easy to use, "plug-play", quite anonymus browsing, free.

As far as proxies go, that depends. There are lots of web-based proxies out there that work cross platform. Just Google "proxy." However those do not let you do a lot of things unless you pay.

If you want to install a proxy on your Vista machine, you will probably need to contact your tech support person. Unless you are very knowledgeable about Windows networking, I wouldn't suggest messing with it. I've spent hours and hours on several occasions trying to get my Windows machines connected to my network and always failed. And I am a computer professional.

But for private browsing, Safari runs on PCs. That capability may also be available in IE or Firefox, but I never had a need to check.

And "hate" is a pretty strong word. Were you abused by a Mac as a child?
