Proxies and Firefox

Hey all. I googled for anonymous proxies, added one to Firefox via manual proxy configuration and got it to work but I can't access https pages. How do I get it to access https?

Does https = SSL? Because I added the same proxy underneath in the SSL proxy section but no luck. The proxy I use is on port 80 if that matters.

I'm also concerned that anyone could be running this anon proxy and see what's being sent. If I use https they won't be able to, right?

Thanks.

I don't know what else to tell you other than

http://anonymizer.com/

being the industry leader.

They are a US company and all they need is "good faith belief" that turning over your records to LEO is necessary to "satisfy any applicable law." Read their privacy policy.

ScrubNinja, you are correct that HTTPS=SSL and that you certainly want to run SSL when using an anon proxy. I would guess that the specific proxy you are using doesn't support SSL.

If and when someone's internet usage (record) is being investigated you can be sure he/she already is f*cked enough that said record being the last thing to be worried about.

if you are ok with trading out a little money for convenience and speed, paid proxies are so much better. I havent browsed without one in the past 7 years on such boards. currently www.blacklogic.com is the one I use. they have multiple servers, us, canada, and UK. Its all VPN encrypted and the setup is easy, even works on my Iphone.

Thanks a lot guys. It seems pretty hard just to find a free proxy that works, let alone one that accepts SSL. I think I'll sign up there or a similar one, foaf, cheers. Any other recommendations for paid services?

Recommendation for paid services- A secure VPN would be awesome.. just search for them. They are fast, too.

A paid VPN connection hosted in a friendly country does seem like a nice option, but the thing I fear is that your IP address being exposed to other VPN users.

How many people out there are willing to drop $100/year unless you are involved in some shady activity? If they are willing to pay that much, they are probably good at what they do and there is a high chance that they do hacking.

The only time my PC has ever been compromised was when I got on TOR and got hacked.

I think the majority of people who use paid proxies are doing one of several things

browsing from work where the firewall blocks certain sites or that monitors where you browse, the vpn hides where you are browsing.

some countries block certain sites or might monitor where you browse so lots of people in such countries want to hide from snoopers.

and of course some people might use a vpn for file sharing music or warez or whatever. the cheaper blacklogic accounts dont let you do torrents, but thats kinda good because it makes them faster since noone is hogging bandwidth.
