Props on the design, very clean looking. I'd go with an HPS if you can keep it cool in there for your lower box, CFL's would be fine for moms and clones and veg IMO.
You wont have all of the answers to your questions until you actually start putting it together and tinkering. Nice idea, interested to see where it goes!

So this is the design so far...
If you stuff the bottom of the airway there with carbon, I'd wonder if it would be too "thick" and restrict air flow way too much. It doesn't give much surface area, just density.
What if you just kept that whole bottom portion open(where the power bar is) and elbowed the air duct into a small canister style filter? Surely you've seen how easy those are to make.
(for light...always use the max that you can)
