Promix BX

I'm using FF OF right now and bought a bale of promix BX.
Ive never used it so i assume this is a "soiless mix" that will need all nutes from liquid fertz
or
can or should you amend it? amending seems like it would go against why you got PM, yes?

right now I like using GH micro and bloom doing the rez 69 formula using KoolBloom in 12/12.
this is easy and has been working great for me.
would that do it from veg-bloom to harvest?

another Q, since it is soiless, or a type of hydro? what about taste and smell of the final product?
I keep reading that hydro nugs lack in that dept?

as far as ph I read 6.5-6.7 so the runoff comes out around 6-6.3 6.3
then i read in another thread 5.8 like you would do for hydro?

Just think of pro-mix or peat as a blank soil... you can amend it to whatever NPK ratio to fit your current growing needs; or you can use liquid nutrition accordingly. If you are using GH nutrients now... i would stick to those for the test run with the new medium.

5.8 is more around the coco range, with peat based mediums i shoot more around the lower half of 6 range. Just remember that peat is a soil-less medium & isn't as porous as a hydro medium... it will get water logged fast if over watered.

when feeding liquids, i've found that with soil-less medium's, 2 weeks full strength florakleen works well for best flavors. i tried straight water, tried water one week, flush the next and vis-versa... 2 weeks solid flushing agent seems to be best i've found.

I go 6.3, and feed, feed, tea with a 2 week flush in promix. Never had an issue with taste, and I believe the teas help create an organic/synthetic balance to get the best of both worlds.

U can amend with light dry ferts, the reason I'd opt to amend promix over using ocean forest is because u have complete know if what's in it and at what ratios its in

It's technically a soilless mix but should be treated like soil in terms of moisture, pH range, and fertilizer doses, and most people just call it soil anyway. You can amend it but the only thing it really needs is a fertilizer to make your plants happy. If you are using the same fertilizer the taste and smell should be very close to your FFOF mix, somewhere between organic and hydro. I don't mess with the pH as long as it's staying between 6 and 7.

big thanks for the input.
good to know my options with it having never really gave it a run.
I know lots of people here use it.

Maybe this sounds like a dumb question

naw.... it doesn't sound like a dumb Q

it is :smoke:

Try doin a 50/50 mix of ur ffof and pm. Thats how im learning the coco deal gradual step in to new mediums. i wanted to start using the coco but hav only run the ffof in the past. Couldnt be happier with my results.. Prob wont go full canna just stick with this half and half deal get the best of both worlds. Massive roots from the cocco aand great flavor of the soil.. Just my two cents just cause it worked for me dosnt mean u will like it..

i have promix bails but refuse to use em. im stuck in the coco mode. promix can be ammended with more perlite or coco or mixed with any dry additives you like. the soil gets crusty and water likes to run down the side when watered. it cant be watered like coco but holds onto nutrients much longer so less ferts needed.

many people use it with success. ive seen many plants on here grown in it that are fantastic.that nute regime seems like a good one for promix as well. as long as u provide all the nutes with all the micros and the npk, youll be fine. try a container on the side and see how you like it. if i recall i never had any bugs in mine as well. i always washed the plastic before anything entered the g room includind those hard to get seems. you could also leave em in the sun in a black plastic bag and bake it sterilise it that way if you worried bout pests. a car works well for sterilizing as well in the summer.

i mix a half of bail of promix bx with one bag of ocean forest.
1 cup bone meal
1 cup blood meal
3/4 to 1 cup of dolomite lime
you can add earth worm castings and kelp meal too. water only until chop. works for veg and flower.

I used straight pro-mix bx outdoors for years with much success. loved it. If they sold it where i live now i'd still use it.
I prefer that over FF, especially Ocean Forest, which has frequently burned some of my more sensitive babies...

Think of it as a blank palette; you can amend it or add liquid nutes as needed, which is what i always did. I found it quite nice for a peat-based medium.

Promix is a very nice stuff and does its job quite well. I've never had a plant look unhappy in it. You can save money by buying bales of peat moss because Promix is 75% peat moss. Add some perlite, dolomite lime, and all purpose fertilizer and that's it.

The only issue I ever had using promix was a PH dive during flower, then I started using a tbls of dolomite lime per gallon soil

I have used Promix BX for years and have not had any problems. If your tap water is a PH of around 7 like mine, you don't even have to bother with adjusting PH. If your water is off the 7 mark, you could always mix a table spoon of Dolomite Lime per gallon of Promix as someone stated earlier and all is well. I have used other soils and soiless mediums and have found for me Promix BX has worked the best. You can always add a little extra perlite but I find the BX has enough. With plain Promix I would add perlite. Try it out and use a good fertilizer with all micro nutrients and you will see it is great stuff to use. Good luck!

signing on to the promix bx train, 10 years going strong, I don't even add anything to it and have never had a problem. Nothing but strong healthy buds. However i dont recommend it to people who hand water once a day.

straight Promix + nutes needs a constant drip, the soil has to stay wet if you allow it to get dry the water will just leak down the sides and into your trays.

Pro mix has the tendency to compact after while. I always add perlite to it to help- usually 1-2 cu ft. to each bale and mix well.

pH of the mix tends to drop over time since fertilizer is a salt, which means it's acidic. I add 3.75 cups of dolomitic lime to each bale. Always mix well too.

If these are done you'll eliminate most of the problems one can have with this medium. Of yeah, water always at 6.3 pH going in, no matter if it has fertilizer in it or not.

hhaha anyways. promix doesnt need any sort of special watering. just water slow at first so hit all the pots so u get the top soil wet.. and then go back and hit with more water to avoid water running off.. havent had any problems what so ever. nice beautiful dark green healthy plants.

honestly it all depends on approach, im a set and forgeter, i like everything to do it on its own, But however if you have the time to get the top of the soil wet first and then water its whatever. That would work just fine.

And I should have clarified I don't keep a drip on them 24/7, when the lights are on i drip every hour. I find constantly wet soil produces more than letting the soil dry out and then reapplying water/nutes once a day or every couple days. its all relevant to what exact setup you have. For me using 3 gallon pots my first larger grow i hand watered everything and would find a dry pot 3 hours later. I switched to my current drip system and I can attest that i have double the yields purely by keeping my plants wet while the lights are on.
