Problems at 3 Weeks

Hi,

I set up my lights at about 600mm from the tops of my seedlings. I was then advised to move them closer to avoid the plants being 'stringy'.

I moved the lights to about 350mm from plants for the last 36 hours and it seems my plants are getting burnt.

I have since lifted the lights again.

Please see photo's of my plants, not looking good.

Advice?

Current setup:
2 x 400W MH
2 x Fans to draw fresh air
1 x Oscilating fan to move air around inside room

Lights are running 24/0

From what I've read here, the distance your light should be from the plants is the distance your hand can cope with; so if it's too hot for your hand at 350 mm, adjust it up till it's comfortable for your hand.

Do you have an Exhaust fan? You don't mention one in your equipment list, and that could also be contributing to the problem.

Another MUST DO! WEAR EYE PROTECTION!!! PLEASE! Welder goggles are a cheap solution. Not the masks. There is a thread in the Growroom Lighting section if my feeble memory serves me correctly.

I do not have an exhaust fan, but there is also no door on this room and the heat have approx 200m3 to disipate into. I will look into closing the room and install an exhaust fan though.

Surrently using 2 x 400W MH. Will switch to HPS for flowering

Your seedlings are definately being burnt by the super-strong/intense light and radiant heat given off by your MH bulbs. These are way too strong for such tiny, unestablished children. I would recommend using cfl's at this point for the first 1-3 weeks or until the little germs make it to about the fourth or fifth node. This will also save you on expensive and unnecessary electricity consumption. If you must use the HID's to start, one will be plenty. No sense in running both to cover such a small footprint. All that is doing is creating more heat, both thermal and radiant. With that being said, it is recommended to keep a 400w HID 3.5-4 feet or 1067-1219mm away from the seedlings. Again, once foliage is developed and you notice rapid leaf growth, the seedling stage is ending and you enter the vegetative stage. This could take anywhere from 1-3 weeks. It is at this point that you would want to worry more about stretching. It is then recommended for vegetative plants under a 400w HID to be 1.5-2 feet or 457-610mm away from the bulb. Don't even worry about adding the second HID until your plants are large enough that you have to start spreading them apart and increasing the size of the footprint. I hope this helps.

The above worked for me, its my first time. I used soft lighting first few weeks, whilst it developed its root system. Only later when they were looking a bit bigger did they get any strong lighting, which for me is 250w.
I started my seeds about 40 days ago, and just flipped em this week. https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=255252


Would be worth only turning one 400w on later, as has been said. Personally, id let em establish themselves a touch more under softer lighting, then the stronger lighting would be more useful. Save ureself the electric, and with some of the savings, if possible, get a carbon filter and decent extraction fan. This will keep smells out, and also bring in fresh air, by sucking the air in, from the 200m3 area. I rekon that would be a good starting point in working out how to dial ure area in for ure use in the following months to come, bearing in mind summers coming up quick.

Im using a tent and one extraction fan connected to a carbon filter. Got a small fan in tent to move air around, and some extra ducting connected inside the tent to outside the tent, which brings air in naturally, due to the negative pressure of the extraction fan.Carbon filter does its job making sure no smells at all.

Bear in mind its my first time, so please listen to the more experienced people first
Im just going on what ive learned so far from watching peeps, and what ive experience during the last 4 weeks.Not really much experience compared to the pros here

if u planning on running 2 400s, then plan ahead for future heat and temps etc..

It is nice and warm in Summer, but we are starting to enter fall, so the heat should not be a problem for much longer. My temperature is now pretty stable at 26 deg. Occasionally on a hot day it will climb to 30.

I have changed around one of my fans to extract. It seems to have made quite a difference.

I went in there this morning for the first time in two days. Plants are really growing exponentially.

I lost two of the Mango plants from the burn, but the other plants seem to be thriving.

Good advice so far. Back off on the lights a lot.

About the welding glasses.. you only need them if you're running barebulb. If the lights are in a hood, and you don't have mass reflectors shining directly into your eyes then don't worry about eye protection.
