Probability of cops finding you via IP address

I've seen quite a few threads about people worrying about being tracked via their IP address and just wanted to share my experience.

----

I work in IT and a few years ago we had a client's server stolen from their office (worth over $10k). We use a background program for monitoring and support and was surprised to see it online a few months later.

I was able to determine the IP, time it came online, web history, the pictures they dumped from a camera, email addresses, license plate numbers, documents referencing legal matters, etc...these people were career thieves - identity theft - stolen property galore.

I worked with a detective at the local police dept and handed everything to them on a silver platter. He said it took three weeks to get a physical address from their ISP (Comcast), and when he did get the address he had to reconfirm the IP address since it had been three weeks. Well the ISP has dynamic address and it changed!

The police never did anything else and the client never got their computer back.

----

Now this is just one experience with the local PD. I'm sure if the FBI or other tech savvy agency was involved more would have come of this.

just because your paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you - I would suggest using safe addresses, encrypt a laptop with TrueCrypt and use public wireless access. Use yer head!

If you're paranoid, unplug your modem and router once a day and you will get a new IP address. Sometimes they do keep track of who had what when, but it would sure get confusing fast!
