Preserving taste

I've never attempted to eat and cook with weed, although one thing always had me curious. One of the things I find fascinating with cannabis is it's ability to have a wide variety of smells and tastes (I learned this while growing Nirvana mango and the sensi garlic bud hybrid forgot what that was called). Mango and garlic - same species of plants. If you had blindfolded me I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between the real thing. Which gets me down to my question...

Does making cannabutter, or dissolving thc in fat, preserve smells or tastes of the weed in any way? Or... is there any way to do so practically? Basically besides it's effects perhaps weed could become the single most important spice/herbal cooking ingredient.

Possible or no?

Oh, and I just had a good idea. I wonder what it would be like to use cannabutter to make weed candy. Like mints. Put them in an Altoid's box and pop them every 15 minutes. I bet the cops wouldn't suspect anything from that!

cannabis definitely leaves a flavor in whatever you cook, however it's nothing like the flavor when you smoke it. most dishes you make with butter will taste the way its supposed to, with a hint of cannabis.

and yes, you can use cannabutter to make some butterscotch candy! i've also seen medical clubs selling gumdrops with THC in em.

THC gum drops sound very tasty! i love the taste as im sure we all do. its a great spice when cooked but definately different from a smoking taste. and canna-mints in an altoids tin sounds great to me.

ive cooked a decent quantity of herb, more of hash however in my experience since i usually leave my product in my butter at the end, i come out with a substance that very much smells and tastes like the herb or hash source mix itself. however as people have noted the taste when smoked vs eaten is indeed different as one would expect, and the taste of cooked is similar to the profile you get out of your jar, as opposed to out of the pipe.

some of my batches of butter have had a really nice herbal flavor to them that perfectly went with roasted potatoes, another batch worked splendidly within some ganache for a rich slightly spiced/sweet hash taste etc
