Pre-filter and pushing

So as i understand it.. the pre-filter is.. well not a prefilter.. when u are pushing thru your filter.. this makes sense.. and I would actually assume it would get clogged up with carbon and shmootz, over time restricting air flow..

I have no other option, so lets not get into that argument here.. and I am using an 8 inch fan with an 8x 24 filter in my less than 4 sq. ft. room.. so i will have plenty of gusto to keep negative pressure..

What do you guys do to prefilter dust and particles in this sitch? I'm thinking of grabbing some sort of filtration material as would be used in an a/c from home depot and strapping that to the open side of my air cooled hood.

Sound okay?

I've read about stuffing the filter with pre-filter.. that just sounds like a poor idea.

also i'm a terrible idea man, and worse handy man.. what home depot material could i use?

much love.

As you said the pre filter is for capturing anything bar the fume/odour. By pushing through the carbon before the prefilter it would meant the filter could become clogged from the inside. However inside a grow tent there generally isn't huge amounts of dust etc so I can't see it being a huge problem unless there was moisture present. I suppose as suggested you could actually make a wall using the pre filter somewhere before the air is pushed through the filter ( maybe over the air intake of the filter). I would be careful trying to make this only a layer thick as a rolled up ball of prefilter may compromise the passage of air.

yeah.. thats my thoughts as well.. I'm thinking that stuff that looks like paper, or the stuff that goes in the wall a/c units.. super thin fabric... My issues are 2 kitties leaving hair and dander all over the fuckin place.. and i went old school hempy = perlite dust.

Take pre-filter off outside of filter. Roll lengthwise into a tube. Place inside filter and spread out to form to inside wall. Have done this for years until I found the joys of inline carbon filters. BTW there is lots and lots of stuff that collects on the inside of a tent/grow area. Unless you filter your intake there will be a fair amount of dust that doesn't make it to the filter/pre-filter.
Which reminds me I need to go vacuum the intake tent window panel!

I've been in a similar unfortunate space-limited circumstance where air was pushed through the carbon filter instead of pulled. It essentially worked the same as I experienced no issue. Don't sweat it. Good luck!

I didn't get prefilter.. and don't really want to buy it.. I like the idea.. but yeah.. The joys of inline eh.. I was ign'ant.. i thought thats how filters worked. Never had to use one in the past.. so i didn't think much about how they actually worked.. I looked in the box and was like.. uhhh.. how come there is only one flange, and one side closed.. after I thought about it for a second the light bulb went off. OHHHH.. it all makes sense.. And now we know.

I'm fortunate enough to have a crawl space above the apt... if I didn't have that I wouldn't be able to grow.. I'm just happy to have the option and I'm doing whatever I can to make it work out. 720 cfm fan.. speed controller and 600 cfm filter.. 42"x42" closet. LOTS of ducting. Gunna make do.. it'll work.. even without the filter, the closet stinks but venting into the crawl -the apt itself is odorless.

I've been using a vortex 747cfm blowing into a 1400cfm Carbon filter for like 8 years now!!! Never had a problem at all. Still runs like the day I hooked it up and still has no odor. And I have some pretty diesel smelling strains.

pretty awesome set and forget with the filter and fan VP.

Do you filter the dust before it gets to the filter?

8yrs and still working? I thought life expectancy on carbon filters was like 12months-2yrs tops. What brand are you using?
