When I moved into my current house I called the power company to ask them to average out my bills so I wouldn't get hit with bigger bills in the summer for A/C. They told me that they would have to average the previous tenant's bills since I had just moved in and that I would have to pay more than $4,000 a month as that's what the previous tenant had used in electricity!

Needless to say, I declined... Apparently my landlord had to pay megabucks to fixup the house after the last tenant's grow.

Sorry, can not STAND the CFL light quality for normal household needs. Gotta have incandescent lamps--and I stock up when they go on sale; eventually they will be outlawed.

Fucking Globalwarming reactionist do-gooders! I don't know which is worst: Jehovah Witness bible thumpers--are do-gooder nannies telling me I can't do this or eat that cuz it is bad for me! Jimi Hendrix got it right when he wrote, "I'm the one that's gonna have to die, when it's time for me to die, so let me live my life the way I want to." (If Six was Nine).

Ha! I hear you on that one. The old ones were really bad, either hospital white, or "Liver failure yellow". Where I am, 75w incandescents are already gone. I don't get it. But, then again, I never did want to be a politician. Maybe there's hope for me yet!
Be well!

I've been getting those for many years. My usage is still lower than my neighbors, with the grow running.

They probably have a bigger grow than you!

There is a thread here currently, forget what it's called, where leo got a search warrant based on the guys electricity usage being 2.5 times that of his neighbours.
He was already flagged though because his landlord apparently told the cops that he might be growing.

I got those, 350% higher usage. And i wasn't even growing. I lived in an inefficient house at the hot ass beach, but most of my neighbors were vacant seasonal rentals or second homes with only weekend use, so theirs were crazy low. Never had any issues from leo that i know about. Nice and private during the week and off-season.

my comp runs 750 watts.

my two amps run a total of 1500 watts.

Dont sweat it. Take out the grow paranoia, and its very possible they are just sending that as a courtesy to let you know, so maybe theres something you can adjust. Again no sweat.

Every month I am getting sent a letter from my power company comparing my usage to my neighbors. Mine is always 2-2.5x as high.

All I am running is 1000 watter on 12:12, a small exhuast fan, and and 8 tube T5 fixture going 24 hours.

I pay my bill on time and never run a past due balance.

Is this anything to be concerned about?

Ive been trying to make adjustments in other areas to help keep it down (only running dishwasher once a week, not as many laundry loads, etc).
Use CFL's. They're cheaper to run, maintain, no heat build up, and cheaper than HID's. In my grow room I have 9 - "Daylight/Bright White" 42 watt (200 watt equivalent) bulbs at 6500K each, and in my flowering room I have a total of 24 - "Soft/Warm White" 23 watt (100 watt equivalent) at 2700K. My electric bill is within my neighbors at all times. Oh, the combined growing areas of both is about 22 sq. ft. Very elongated so I can keep several plants in the system.

Compact florescents are harder to recycle than filament , its no good banning one without properly recycling the other , vast numbers are still buried with household waste despite traces of mercury , mostly a dead tube on a serviceable ballast.

Incandescents are withdrawn from general sale here now , but electrical factors are holding good stocks under the counter if you ask , and dodgy imports will always be available.

Yeah, switching to CFLs traded one problem for another. Saved some energy at the point of use and loaded our landfills with mercury.

Re: Power Company keeps sending me comparisons of my usage compared to my neighbors

A 1k is peanuts... and don't sweat these notifications.... many power companies do this for a few reasons. Legal obligations for one, for two, they've determined that getting people to conserve comes at a lower cost than to produce MORE power. Its nothing to sweat, trust me. If you live in an area where gas isn't common as a main source of heat, then especially don't sweat the higher usage. I meet people everyday who have been paying crazy amounts of money to heat their home for very long periods of time, not knowing their heat pump broke down.... or in some cases say you heat with only resistance heat - baseboards, cadets, elec furnace etc, but your neighbors have a heat pump and have 1/4 or less the usage. Not to mention any other major appliances that use just as much energy as a 1k. Hell, most space heaters use 1.5kw.

But if your usage is 2.5 times higher than your neighbors, your 1k light is NOT the cause. What do you use for heat? Sounds to me like you just have an inefficient home. Which as do millions of other folks who DONT grow weed ;)

My 4kw room along with a t5 veg setup only increases my bill by ~$120 or so. Thanks heavens for cheap power in my area. But that's beside the point.

Hope any of this helps.

Use CFL's. They're cheaper to run, maintain, no heat build up, and cheaper than HID's.

They are perfectly adequate for non commercial vegging , use them myself with good results , easy to move and swap around plants and the same wattage of heat is spread out.

The current 6500k daylight spectrum CFL,s available from 65W to 150W are proveing a good choice so far , but dont know how long the phosphors will last yet at 2000 hours.

The build quality on the larger ones seems better than the smaller , have taken a lot of dead and new bulbs apart and found some real horrors , they are usually a little more efficient and the larger size enables more reliable hand assembly in some third world sweatshop.

Would be wary of haveing 33 individual CFL,s running , despite seeming safer than a sodium solution.

Have had three low wattage CFL,s of different makes melt down or flame from the ballast in ten years , two could easily have cost lives , the amount of chokeing fumes was scary from all and they were European brands , low end chinese cheap stuff can only be worse.

Have lined the relevant areas with thin white painted 22 guage steel sheet for peace of mind.

Oh nooo...there goes the neighborhood. Musta pissed off some Jehovah Witnesses--they neg repped my earlier post! My heart is crushed!

0 out of 2 members found this post helpful.

I doubt any do-gooders neg repped me, the one's I know enjoy criticism and are not easily agitated or repulsed.

LOL....it's all good!

BTW...can someone remind of the proper procedure to clean up a broken CFL bulb that accidentally dropped on the floor? What do I do with the mercury?...does it go in the trash and off to the landfill...or do I flush it the toilet and off it goes to the ocean?

I don't think a 1k and a T5 panel is excessive for any dwelling larger than a dorm room.

I got a strange phone call several days ago asking about my electricity usage, it didn't sound like a call centre worker, because the guy was humming and hahíng like he didn't know which question to ask next, where call centre operators tend to have their spiel down pat, as they do it a hundred times a day.
And then yesterday morning I put out my trash can and when I went to collect it 4 hours later it wasn't there. Could leo have taken it to look through it?
I don't know but a week ago an undercover leo was parked just down from my driveway watching the place.

Kind of a weird post. Odd aggressive/passive tone. Out of character with your other posts. Just sayin.

One negative issue about TOU tariff billing--twice a year I got to adjust the clocks for Daylight Savings Time....like today. They either gain or lose an hour of light (wanna keep the dark exactly 12 hours).

Alone

Common thing.
I get them from my gas company every few months.
Compares my usage to the other neighbors in my area and then lists tips for reducing bill/increasing efficiency.

It's nothing bad, they are giving it to you in a effort to help you save money by making you aware that your usage is on the high end for your neighborhood, and letting you know ways to bring it down.

Good Post Puffaluffagus.
By law they have to send you ways to be efficient in your energy consumption but believe me when I tell you that they would rather you not fix anything and continue to pay them more money. Its nothing to worry about at all. If you were running 6 - 1000watters in flower room, 2- 1000 watters for veg and a 8 bulb T-5 for clones... then yes...I would be concerned.
