Potting soil question...

hey Gang, got another question.
i found some cheap potting soil and i want to know if you think it's any good,
it has peat moss, compost and sand in it, it was less than $2 a bag, but i'm not too sure i like the sand.
i will of course add my own bone meal, blood meal, perlite and nutes.
any thoughts? thanks. be cool

Is it SuperSoil??? If not, what is it called? Buying the "big name" stuff is all well and good but you can do fine with the cheap stuff too. It is all about your mix of perlite and what(and how much) nutes you use.

Thanks Brian, It wasn't "supersoil" brand, it just was called "potting soil" in a black and white bag. i found it at the local Menards in thier garden center.
for those of you who dont know Menards is like Home Depot or Lowes.
do you think the sand will be a problem? be cool

I would say no because it is probably a small amount as far as the ratio to other componets of the soil. Supersoil says it has sand in it too but I have never confused my pots for the beach.

sounds to me like it could be a decent mix if you add about 25% perlite to it... and of course the other amenities you listed would help too :joint:

All potting soils have sand and or loam in it. This is for drainage to offset the high amount of peet it has......

Aaahhh, I see JJ. Makes sense to me. Make sure to use that perlite Sloppy. I use a 1/3 perlite, 2/3 soil and have fine results.

My advice is to not buy the cheapest soil out there. I looked into the making of potting soil and what I found was scary. Your cheapest brands even use the by products from sewage treatment plants as a filler. For the few extra dollars you will spend, your yield will more than cover the extra expense of better soil.....

I think they did for a while. To get by that the companies serilize the "soil" with steam to kill any bacteria. If you look most treatment plants are located on creeks or rivers. This is so it is easy to pump the treated water back into the system.

Save big money at .. Menards!!

p.s. you have to 'poke' shop for good topsoil. Good topsoil should be free of most the crap you described like leaf, twigs, compost, sand, peat, rocks, etc. Good topsoil should be very dark almost blackish [ not brown ] and shouldnt be too overloaded with humectants [ clay like pieces.. some is good.]

Yes its American, like i said it's like the Depot just not as big of chain.
thanks for all the info everyone, i'll put it to good use. be cool

sand is deffenitly not a problem, it drains well and airs well. while living in az, i went right to the worm farm and would buy worm castings unscreened for 150.00 a pickup load. it consisted of sand soil and castings worm eggs and worms i used it straight up in 5 gl pots. best yield ever. i also tryed mixing 50x 50 with super soil with great results. super soil 17 years ago was a lot different than it is today
