Pot size

Hey guys, i was wandering if 7 litre pots (approx 1.85 US gallons) were big enough to finish plants in (considering they will have about 2-3 weeks veg)?
And if it is too small (if they get rootbound), is it enough to give them more nutes or do they really need to be transplanted in order for their growth/yield not to be stunted?

Thanks

Peace

Thats cutting it short, but there are too many variables to really answer your question.Strain, how long you veg and other things will determine how big they will get.I would say for the average indica strain if you veg until alternating nodes or preflowers 3 gallon would probably be the smallest I'd flower in.

Thanks for the answer skeletor
Here are a few more details, strain: misty (about 8 weeks flower apparently), 8 plants in 0.5m2, 4 under 400W envirolights and 4 under 150w hps, plan to veg for 2 weeks, maybe 3 max if really needed... i dont want too tall plants coz those lights dont have great penetration power, gonna try to get them to grow one main cola, instead of LSTing them...
Any input much appreciated,

Thanks

You should be fine, just veg them for only a few weeks. The yield will obviously be smaller, and they will probably need to be watered more often.

You'd have a much better chance if start in a 4 inch pot, then transplant to maybe 1 gallon, then your 1.7 gal to finish.Another words, start out in a small container and let the rootball fill it well before transplanting up,the same goes for the second pot,I'd transplant twice using a total of 3 pots.If you plant directly into the 1.7 gal or even transplant only once,I doubt you'd finish well.

This point can never be stressed enough. It is one of the most important and most missed aspects of the growing process.

You need this transplant method for good root developement. Especially since you are going to finish in a smaller container. Getting that massive root ball will = bigger buds at finish.

yeah the bigger the pots the biiger the buds i think 3g. or 5g.would be suficent.

No, the bigger the root ball=bigger buds.

If you have a big container and little root mass then you have small buds. The root ball needs to grow with the size of the container you are growing in.

i use 8" sq. pots from seed. i can get an oz. off each. i grow under 750 hps and grow from 11 to 15 pots. you can do better under a scrog. i do water very 2 days and the plants need suport. i strart flowering when the frist plant hits 10 ". most plants go 55 , 60 days. so i say your plants should do fine .

If you're watering every 2 days you're really not letting the soil go through its wet dry cycle which is very important in root development.I normally water every 4 or 5 days

These 9 Lifesaver clones were vegged in the 1.5 gallon pots for 30 days. 400w.

15 Days:

At the flip, 30 days:

30 days into flower:

They finshed around 55 days but what I noticed when disposing was the roots were not bound at all and still had plenty of room to grow in the pots. There were roots here and there at the bottom but not a lot. I was pretty surprised. 2-3 weeks more veg to fill up the rootball at least.

I yelided an oz a plant, not counting the stuff the girl and I smoked as we waited for it all to try. :joint:

Smaller pots require more accurate nutrition. Closer to perfect. There is little buffer of nutrients with a small amount of soil. They may also require more frequent watering which can be time consuming if your doing it by hand. :2cents:

I start my clones (and seeds too actually) in 10 oz. styro cups, then 20 oz then either 1/2 gallon or 2 gallon pots, the ones in the 1/2 gallon go into 3 gallon pots a couple weeks later. Usually a couple weeks at each stage.

I'm working at about 7000 ft above sea level and I think shit grows a little slower up here

It's labor intensive and a major PIA but it propagates dense healthy root growth and healthy roots make healthy plants. Also, it make it easier to avoid water problems.

I have grown sativa that was rootbound in 7 gallon pots and over 8 feet high, but most of the indica I grow does just fine in 3-4 gallon during flower.

I am always tempeted to finish in two gallon (lazy), but once I weed out the males, I have the extra room and the plants just love going into that fresh soil going into flower. What a growth spurt, and the flowers pack on quick after that final transplant.
