Pot size

When dealing with auto flowers does pot size have much to do with overall production....I have 4 massive midget (by heavy weight seeds) ..I just started in root riot and getting ready to plant in some promix HP...should I go with a 5 or 10 gallon pot..

Never ran auto flowers, unless you count Blubonic. Normally a larger pot delays auto flower tendencies, maybe that would help your yeild. Not sure if it works like that with a true auto flower. I think most people will say 5 gal or less.

Depends on strain and soil + pot type.
A 10-20 airpot with a light soil mix helps achieving bigger yields compared to smaller pots, but some autos stay small(dwarfs) and don't need more than 15l pot, so I think 15l is the best all-around size for most strains and soils.
In non metric terms, 5 gallons is good.

I'm currently testing 3 methods of germing seeds all which indicate germ and straight to soil, no transplanting at all, is the best method to use, I often gloat about that I get no delay or transplant shock with autos ...and have just proved myself wrong ...UGH!

Tho the root ball is a lot smaller they have much smaller and finer roots than the photos ...so pot size does matter I budget 1 liter per week or 1x us gallon per month, 3 month auto 3 us gallon pot ..good luck

I will be using a soil less mix with advance nut...and here is a little about the strain
Genetics: Afghani/Nepalese Auto x Hawaiian/Jamaican Auto
Type: Sativa 50% Indica 50%
CBD: 0.7%
THC: 18%
Harvest Time: Approximately 8 weeks from germination
Height: 60-80cm
Indoor Yield: 450gr/m2
Outdoor Yield: 90-180g per plant
Heavyweight Massive Midget Autoflowering Feminised Seeds Info

The power of this exotic strain, is beautifully hidden beneath its mouth watering tropical flavours, a must for all discerning smokers with an eye for quality.

We've taken a highly stable Afghani/Nepalese autoflowering hybrid and then crossed it with our Jamaican/Hawaiian autoflowering hybrid to produce the Massive Midget.

Tested through five generations for uniformity and stability this beauty is now amazing its growers with abundant yields of compact resin covered buds.

The smoke is smooth with a citrus aroma and fruity-herbal flavour, the high is calm and highly creative, and its high CBD levels make it a useful medical strain with good pain relieving qualities.

Get used to it, this is no ordinary auto this is a Heavyweight auto!

3 gallons is the most you will ever need. I use one gallon but that's just me. I don't have much room to work with. If you have tons of space use 3 gallons and your plants should get pretty big depending on the strain.

As You also say, from what ive seen there is no need to go bigger than 3 or 5 gal if you got the Space.

The most important thing IMO, is to start the auto in the container which it will remain until harvest, ie. stay away from transplants.

If you get the transplant in at first sight of sex the plant will keep growing without a hint of shock. I start all my plants in beer cups and then transplant to bigger pots afterwards. I don't use feminized seeds though so I have to do it this way.

IMO, the taproot argument is bunk. I've had auto plants grow 3ft tall after being transplanted from beer cups to 2 gallon pots.

I go from 18 oz solo cup (square bottom), to 1 gal nursery can and finally to 3 gal at flowering. Plants jump for joy after each transplant.

As in your situation, def is easier to manage and if well executed as you state, will get you to goal.

However if using fem auto´s, i would still say its easiest to give it its final home from day 1 if possible.

I think its all about eleminating risks.

Thanks for the feedback.

Peace

I ended up putting 2 in 5 gallon pails and 2 in some short 7 gallon containers that are large in diameter..that I picked up at homedepo for $4.00...I will see if the pot size makes any difference...

I was wondering about this too, so the majority opinion would be 3gal would be the best, but 5gal would be the absolute max?
I have read that autos prefer an airy soil(I will be growing in soil) would it be better to use a tall skinny pot, a short wide pot or something thats "square" in height and width?

Oh and I have yet to make my grow space so there are no height limitations yet, but I do know I want it to be between 4-6 sq ft.

Square or circular. Doesn't make a difference. Pot should be half as wide as it is tall. I used tall skinny cups and the plants grew big but the buds weren't as thick as I thought they should have been.

I really don't think your right on this...in my own grows I have seen pot size matters...and where did you come up with that you want the pot twice as tall as the diameter of it....your saying a 12" pot should be 24" tall

Yes. Go to the store and measure them. I would bet you that I'm right. It's just a rule of thumb. Doesn't have to be exact. Just close. You will see better results if the roots have enough room to grow out and down. I've only been growing autos for ten years. I'm probably wrong though.

Well if the pot is twice as tall as it is around the roots are not going to be growing out much...now are they...because they only have 1/2 the room to grow out as down...
