Pot...Medicine for dogs?

I have a beagle pup that is about 6.5 months old with separation anxiety. When I'm around he is the most loving well behaved dog for his age that I've ever owned, and shaping up to be one of the best rabbit dogs I've ever seen. When I'm gone he howls and does his best to let everyone know that he's alone. Which is pissing my neighbors off, not something I want considering the contents of my closet.
I know that pot can obviously be used to help with various problems that people suffer from, anxiety being one of them. I'm thinking about giving my little monster some bud the next time I have to go to work to see if it calms him at all. I figured a couple good second hand bong rips or some proper scoobie snacks would do the trick well. Anyone else tried/heard of this? I don't see any reason it would hurt him, I figure the side affects should be much like with people...eat, sleep, repeat...

Ack, no.
Almost all pups that age, especially the ones with good attentive owners have that.
This is what you do:
You go outside, if he has it hard, hell probably howl the second you step outside.
Go back in, speak to him firmly in a low voice, but not agressive. Hell let his ears down. That means hes sorry, so to speak. Pet him. Take him to his favourite spot. Go back outside again. If he can be quiet for 10 seconds, go back inside, praise him, give him a cookie. This may be the end of it already, if not repeat, and make the itnervals longer each time. Only give him a cookie if he has been quiet. Only be firm for 3 seconds orso, and when your firm, never give him a cookie ;-)
It will work, but sometimes it can take a little while. Also, be sure to leave approved toys, or buy lotsa shoes.

Could work. A friend of mine had a pup that was absolutley crazy...the second anyone would walk in the door she would jump all over you and no one could get her to stop. She even did it to her owners. We'd go to smoke and she'd be jumping all over everyone when we were rolling/packing whatever. After we started smoking though (not even blowing it at her) shes just chill and sit on the floor, sometimes just fall asleep. I'm not sure if this is because we were chilled out so she was as well but it seemed to work.

Maybe try it and leave for a couple minutes and see if he starts barking/whining. Nice dog btw, I love beagles.

Oh, just don't smoke a crazy ass pure sativa with him...:joint:.

*edit* I'm no dog expert...in fact I;ve never owned one...just throwing out ideas.

One of my Golden's used to be like that, without that ear splitting beagle yelp (sorry, but that beagle cry is iiiiiirksome). He eventually grew out of it, however not because of anything I could do. I tried a lot of things, finally even asked the vet what to do. He prescribed me tranquilizers, which I never used, I felt bad medicating my dog for the sole benefit of benefiting myself.

edit.. hey i remember you from OG Cannibus_Connoisseur!

aw man i love beagles!! yours is so cute!! what's his name? yeah lax, they can howl like crazy it does get annoying but you get used to it lol

we have 2 beagles, and they are great rabbit dogs! (just took the younger one for a run this morning and we chased a squirrel for about a half-mile lol)our older one (buddy) has seperation anxiety and he's 7 yrs old! he's very attached to us. would howl like crazy when we leave. but when we got the younger one (bailey) his anxiety was greatly reduced. they hang out together all the time, they are like brothers. they keep each other company and play while we are gone. so i did some research and found out that hound dogs are very much pack dogs and are better behaved when you have more than one (dachshunds and bassetts are this way too).. anyway the pot might help, but go easy on the little guy. we made pot treats the other week and buddy ate some that i accidentally dropped and he got sick (cannabutter probably hard to digest).. buddy hates pot smoke but bailey doesn't mind it..

here's bailey:

here's buddy:

I have been using oil as medicine for years on some of the older dogs that I shelter. I haven't seen any bad effects from it, but as I stated, the dogs are old.
I have also given my main male pitbull breeder nose hits for all 11 years of his life. Still seems normal and he still acts like a young dog.

I must also add that your howling dog problems can be corrected without sedation. Dogs that are bored tend to act out by chewing, howling, ect. Is your dog leash trained? Do you walk him EVERYDAY? Its important to do this....#1 for excercise....#2 is for purpose. You give a dog purpose and it relieves the boredom of hanging out all day doing human stuff. I'll get more indept if you ask.....

Hope this helps...

I've tried going outside and waiting for him to get loud. It normally takes 5-10 minutes before he starts to get vocal. And its not just a little whimper, when he gets started he belts out the loudest screachy beagle bay he can. It sounds like his legs are being broken, its easily heard from across the street. I'll run in and yell at him, and try for a longer time so he can earn his reward, but no such luck. By that point he's ready to let everyone know he's home alone and pissed off about it.
He gets walked every morning, and almost every evening we go to the bottoms so he can run the rabbits that come out before dark. Not to mention the nice long hike we get to take a couple times a week to water and check on the outdoor plot.
I've thought about medication and shock collars etc, but they seem a little harsh to me. Pot sounded like a natural alternative. I might give it a shot, but not before I try a couple other things.
My old roomate has a beagle basset hound mix named Buddy (I call him Bagel) that I'm going to borrow for a couple days to see if having a doggy companion around all day makes him happy, and therefor quiet.

mars2112 - I remember you too. Its always nice to run into a familiar OGer here and there. Those are some nice lookin little hounds you have there. Mine's name is Remington (Remi). I think beagles are too smart for their own good sometimes...My buddy has his brother who also has SA, but worse than mine. He bought one of the citronella bark collars that shoots a stream of citronella water into the dogs face when they bark. After about 3-4 days of that the dog learned that he could close his eyes to keep the citronella out, and bark his ass off for a couple minutes and the canister would be empty. Then it was back to barking/baying as he pleased. He said he would come home to a house that reacked of citronella and a wet dog...LOL

Spreading Seed - Those are some nice looking pits. Alot of my friends have them. Not a one if them is aggresive at all, real sweet hearts. They all just roll over and wrestle with my 25lb beagle, he always acts like king-ding-a-ling when we get home from there houses after an evening of battling with the big dogs. ha ha

EDIT: The little shit hasn't even taken the effort to get off the bed except to go out and take care of business this morning all day. I wish he would do that on the days I have to work too...

hey nomore.. a few things about beagles i've learned over the years (my mom's had 3 beagles, my brother has 2 now - yeah we love our beagles lol)

1. they are very hyper and energetic until around age 4-5, then they start to slow down a bit

2. you will never get them to stop howling, baying or barking. this is how beagles communicate, and they are scent hounds so they are extremely sensitive to smell.. any little smell, odor, scent sets them off. they don't know how else to communicate other than howling or baying. you get used it lol.. especially if you live near wildlife like we do, our dogs are constantly sniffing out animals, that's what beagles were bred to do and you can't get it out of them lol

3. beagles are extremely loyal - as our most dogs - but beagles are pack dogs and see humans as part of the pack. they always want to be with you or near you and they hate when you leave the house

4. they can be serious couch potatoes and love to cuddle with you, but they also love to play, our dogs have a huge collection of dog toys and bailey will take out every single one to play with :)

5. seriously, if you get another dog i bet remi will be so happy and better behaved, they just don't like to be alone for too long. the family we adopted bailey from had no idea how beagles are, they were totally overwhelmed with him and couldn't leave him alone in the house when they left.

good luck, you got a really cute one!! beagles are really special dogs, they are also great with kids.

best way to stop the dog from barking is a shock collar.
i know it sounds like a bad thing but hey it works....
my friend who lives in an apartment got a beagle and when he would leave the dog would go crazy and make so much noise. the beagles name is buddy lol must be a common name for dogs. ok well anyways he ended up having to get a shock collar and it worked and the dog doesnt bark anymore.

I strongly disagree with shocking a dog. Why would you want to punish a dog for doing what a dog does? I agree somewhat with Mars on getting your beagle a compainion. BUT I stand by what I said about leash training your dog. Believe it or not....leash training fixes 99% of the problems folks have with canines.

By the way....I've been rescuing and training dogs for over 30 years. I specialize in rehabilitating aggresive dogs, which are the most challenging.

Please Please do not give your dog alot of pot at one time..They get really messed up if you give them too much and end up confused, displaced, losing motor skills and bladder control......Not good to give him a big bud before you go to work.....Please do not do that to the little bugger..

But giving him a little at a time like a 1/16 of a gram.... that is ok.... here is a link to some information.... http://www.med-marijuana.com/research_medipaws.htm

and an article

MARIJUANA FOR MUTTS
Cannabis oil helps arthritic dog dig again

Tasha, the gopher-digging Doberman, has overcome arthritis after taking medical marijuana.

"She's quite a digger," says Tasha's owner, Chick Brownbill of Turner Valley, in southern Alberta. "That's her recreation."

But all that excavating resulted in chronic soreness in Tasha's front wrists, causing the dog to limp -- and to stop pursuing those pesky varmints.

"I don't think she ever got a gopher, but digging was the love of her life," Brownbill says.

Nothing helped until his daughter got a bottle of MediPaws cannabis oil from a local distributor. It's promoted as relieving arthritis in pets -- plus boosting the immune system and preventing tumours and heart attacks.

The oil is extracted from marijuana that is grown with less than 10 parts per million of THC -- the mind-altering ingredient.

"We gave it to her and, now, after three weeks, there's no limp at all," Brownbill says.

Delivering the oral medication was no problem, he says. "We put it in her supper, and she eats anything."

Brownbill also gave the oil to Hershey, his chocolate-coloured Labrador retriever, to help its sore hips.

Brownbill's veterinarian, Ingrid Rozema, says she has not prescribed MediPaws because the content is unregulated and "there is no scientific data indicating that marijuana is helpful."

In Edmonton, Pamela Dykes bought MediPaws cannabis oil for Badger, her English springer spaniel, hoping to ease the arthritis in the dog's back legs.

After only one week, she hasn't seen any change, but says she will keep trying for another week or so.

Rozema says she has not seen any harmful effects upon Tasha or Hershey -- but jokes "I wanted to know if it gave them the munchies."

MediPaws is distributed by Med Marijuana Inc. of Halifax.

....

Take that big bud and give him a little at a time for a month..hehe or better yet make him some doggie treats with the correct dose baked inside....And take that little bugger to work with you hehe.....

Or give the neighbor the bud and tell him to smoke it and deal with the howling.....Lmao

No matter what good luck and be careful.....Don't OD the little guy!
