I'm having heat problems. thinking about a portable ac, 10k btu seems overkill for a 2x6 foot closet with 400w mh (or 1kw hps). suggestions anoyone?

I am sure you can adjust the temp..so whatever it may be it could be fine.. think of it as an investment if you ever choose to expand? Iunno tho

It's also more than I'd like to spend ($350-$400), and hopefully, I won't need them much after september till next year. ( I have 2 growspaces, I need 2

in that small of a room YOU WILL STUNT UR PLANTS with a big ac like that trust me ...i did it.....

sure you can adjust your temp to whatever...but ...you have no control over how long the a/c compressor stays on...and that will stay on for awhile no mater how fast it cools off...soooo u have this freezing cold air blowing all over ur plants....it stunts them and kills them..

can you ac the room that the closet is in??...that would be the best bet..then you just intake the cool room air into the closet...

let me know if this helps....

I got this one off ebay. It's 7500 BTU, has a digital timer thing and works very well. Besides the temp lowering is how well it dehumidifies. MAN what a lifesaver. I don't have budrot at all anymore, even in the biggest of buds. I lower the temperature setting a lot during the last few weeks to keep humidity low. I love these things. This one here has lasted me 2 years of straight use now.

that sounds cool GIS..Yeah Issack I suppose you are right, I haven't bought a portable ac.. but have seen them in action..and what you suggested seems to be the best item to let it be in the room wher ethe closet is.

acing the whole room would make me cooler (a hardship I'm not sure I want to bear) If I was going to take this approach, does a portable have any edge over a window unit I'm at ground level, so a window unit is easy (and cheaper, I think)do you have to have an intake or vent outdoors with a portable?

you have the output that needs to blow out a window (or through a scrubber). i have a sunpentown 10,000btu unit, cost me almost $400 but you can get the 7,500btu cheaper (ebay of course).

what you MUST get is a unit with self-evaporating. these use much much less electricity because they use the water from dehumidifying to cool the compressor. in my room i only have to empty it once every 2 weeks. i think you could get away with a powerful window unit but don't forget to take care of the smell! good luck...

window units are $60+ and all you need is a frame made out of 2x2 or 2x4 lumber to support it, and tray to catch the condensation. in room units that vent by a dryer duct to the outside start around $500 and you will have to cover up the scent of the exhaust which must be ducted outside your grow room.

what kind of fan and hood are you using? with a 400 you shouldn't need a/c. with a 1000 with a good hood with glass you shouldn't have problems if you use a quality inline fan that moves a lot of air. how is your ventilation set up? i would start there before you waste money on an a/c system.

I have no ventilation on either hood. the problem there would be I live in an apartment, my closets are closets, and hacking the doors or walls for ducts is simply out of the question. as it stands, I have double accordion doors on each closet. I leave one open all the time. I have a single oscillating fan about 3' off the floor just to exersize the plants. I'm going to order a couple of 8" fans this week (I'll put an intake on the floor and an exhaust on the shelf at the top of the closet.)

Window AC (If you can) 60-100 bucks and good Ozone gen for 100 bucks.... then again you have to be able to handle the ozone smell..

Then you have no options. Get a vented hood with glass, and vent it out the opening in the door, and hang a peice of panda film over the whole opening. do you honestly believe there is a device you can put in there that will magically reduce the temperature? the only way to do that is by raising the humidity which you don't want. its simple physics, your SOL unless you build a cabinet or something. closet growing is for fluros and thats about it. build yourself a cabinet you can sit in your living room with the a/c system from your house. either that, or learn how to repair and replace dry wall, its not hard. if you don't want to do that, then build a cab or your plants are going to die soon from the heat. an a/c system isn't a solution to you.

junit, what ozone generator costs $100? even if he were to be able to use a/c, a carbon filter would be a lot cheaper.

bottom line is

YOU NEED VENTILATION (air cooled lights, intake and exhaust fans (inline) before anything), ...IN A REAL GROW ROOM NOT A CLOSET.

If you dont' have a/c in your apartment, you will have to build a cab or buy a c13 or something and put that in a larger room with more cubic feet of space to absorb the heat from your lights. so go buy yourself a cheap saw, a screwdriver, some wood, an inline fan, a carbon filter, and a vented hood, and get to work. you have a lot to due if you want to yield. time to start over, hopefully you can keep your plants alive till you get a cab built or whatever solution you decide on. a/c simply isn't it.

I figger the real solution for this year is called autumn. I HAVE an ozone generator. for all you suggesting construction projects, allow me to splain what left hemi means: my left side is partially paralyzed (the leg sorta kinda works, the arm is awol) I do think if I reduce the ambient temp of the room, it will help reduce the temps in a closet it shares airspace with. I do have a marginal understanding of physics. I don't see how a cab (reducing the overall volume) will help things at all. I have thought about building some cabs for other reasons. If I did not make it clear, my intent is to drastically improve the airflow in the closet in the coming week. the a/c is something I'm really just thinking about for next summer. there is certainly no room in my projects budget before then unless someone points me to something cheaper than I'm seeing in froogle

Just as my incomplete knowledge of physics lead me to believe, a cold front has proved my theory correct, if I take 20degreesf out of the ambient room temps, my closet temp falls right into line
