portable a/c

alright guys, i need to purchase a portable a/c unit, and the ONLY place that I have found that even carries them is home depot, and they only have two models, both are 10k btu's, both are 500 bucks. just wondering if anyone knows any places online that has units that are slightly bigger and/or slightly less inexpensive.

I have to have the a/c regardless, but hopefully i can find something cheaper. I've seen a few sites with cheaper units but to be honost after shipping it wouldnt be much cheaper. and i can't wait much longer, the plants i have going are turning into complete bushes cause i've been waiting until i get the a/c to flip them to flower. anyways, any input is appreciated.

stay safe,
dirty

Walmart has them starting at $328 for a 7Kbtu up to $476 for a 12Kbtu...search for "air conditioner" from their home page.

i was looking at some portable a/c's and most of them say they have the "self evaporating technology", so it basically exhausts alot of the moisture out through the exhaust hose, correct?

I'm just curious as to how much moisture is exhausted out, because I was planning on venting the unit into my attic, so i have concerns about too much moisture

i just went through this. i bought a 10k dual hose from sears, and today exchanged it for a 12k. you need a dual hose becuase the single hose exhausts the stank. the dual exchanges air, so no exhaust from the room. the a/c's wont dehumidify and cool, only one or the other. i run a dehumidifier too.

dont shop at walmart

I'm also buying an AC this summer and I need some advice on what to buy.

I've heard 4,000BTU per 1,000w
So I will need about 12,000BTU AC.
I'd like the AC to easily exhaust the heat it produces, and also a plus if the air it exhausts is pulled from outside, so there is no smell leaving the room. A window AC might work, but I would require that I cut a large hole in a wall to install it, which I'd rather not do. I think what I want is a Portable 12kbtu unit is what needed? A Split AC? whats the mean?

What kind of AC do I need to fit these requirements?

grrr.... i dunno guys. I need to buy an a/c unit fast, but i need to find the right one. ideally in this room, i wanna run 2 1000w's, 2 600w's, and a 400w on the veg side of the room, along with some floro's. my main concern right now is that the a/c i'm exhausting into the attic space will be so moist it will cause mold and whatnot.

i'm just in a real bad spot right now, haha. plants are vegged longer than they needed under the 400w metal halide, and i want to flower them under both my 400w mh and my 400w hps until i can atleast get a 1000w in there, at which time i plan to start vegging my clones under the 400w mh.

I guess my main question is, how moist is the air coming out the exhaust? after i get the a/c tho to be honost i'll probably also install a good sized attic fan to pull out all that extra heat.

And my next question is, can i borrow some money???

heehee, take it easy gentlemen.

p.s. sorry i havent put anymore pics up, but it's too embarrassing, the room is a fucking mess, i havent had any real time to work on it, or any real money to put into it, thus why i still havent shelled out the money for a portable a/c or some much needed lights. I really need to act soon tho cause the vegged plants are around two and a half feet tall, and i've already topped them, heh. I'm afraid when I flower them they'll get TOO tall.

High Dirty:

I have a 12000 btu Sunpentown digital. It does a good job, but
a) it does not restart after a power outage
b) it does exhaust air from the room

If you must go portable, get the dual hose.

But I have buyer's remorse. In hindsight, I would have gladly maxed out a credit card for the ductless mini-split. At the time I purchased my Sunpentown, I saw some for as little as $750. Same btu.

I got the $500 10,000BTU portable A/C from Home Depot 2 weeks ago. It took my 2,000 watt bloom chamber from an average of 95f to an average of 70-75f. So, I am happy!!

thanks guys, i really appreciate all the great input :)

i was looking at that 10k btu portable and the depot also sirharry, for the fact that it's easy, just get it, get it on home and set her up, heh. But for 500 bucks i've seen some portables online that were alittle bigger and some of them were actually less than 500 and that'd be after the shipping.

ack, decisions, hehe. :)

Yeah, I had been needing it for weeks already, so I couldn't wait for shipping. As I said, my room was averaging 90+ degrees!! So, in my case, I needed it that day. But it does work great.

sirharry sending you a pm, hope ya get it and can reply soon, i appreciate it. =)

and for all to know, i did buy an a/c unit, 10k, from home depot, ack, haha. But as sirharry was sayin, i just needed it right then to be honost i should've boughten it weeks ago. I've been neglecting the plants honostly, the clones i've taken were doing fine and now they've mostly died, just been so much going on it's insane, memorial day was my only day off in the past week or so and I had to see family etc. etc., but i DID get the a/c today, and got it all set up and it's running in the room as we speak.

I'll probably put the plants in flower tomorrow hopefully, gonna be working double shifts at work for the next few weeks which isnt gonna make anything any better, but if anyone can point me in the direction of a good cloning link then by all means send my way cause before i put the girls into flower i think i'll take more clones again, hehe.

anyways, stay safe everyone,
Dirty

Hi Dirty,

I see you bought the 10k btu ac....... what are your outside temps...... and the temps in the room now using the AC? are you running the full 3600w as you said or did you have to use less because of the smaller sized AC (btu's)........

I am thinking of getting AC for the summer and was wondering how well the single hose type does.... Seen lots of split systems and these as peeps mentioned are far more effecient but also cost more and you gotta have the condensor outside and window or similar........

How are you dealing with the smell from the room being exhausted along with the hot air?

Have you thought about making 2 x bloom rooms each running 1600w? While 1's on the other is off.... this way in theory you only have to cool 1600w with 10k btu's instead of 3200w..... just something to think about ;)

Anyway I'd be intrested to hear if your AC is working out for you....

peace!

ive read that ionizers in the room can ionize the aroma right from the bud. VT are your dried buds stinky?

howdy mampi, sorry for the delay in responding to your post.

I don't have 3600w in the room at all yet, sorry, wish like hell i could tell ya cause that'd be nice to have my room how i want it.

right now i just have the veg side set up with some floro's, and a 400w mh. I also have a 400 hps i'm going to use in the flower side, and i went out and bought a 1000 hps today actually and hopefully i can have it up and running tomorrow evening, god willing.

as far as the smell there's not much since the plants are still vegging, but having this single hose unit DOES put the growroom under negative pressure. for instance, i have the windows, styrofoam insulation behind that, then 6 mil black plastic behind that, when the unit is exhausting the hot air the plastic will pull out, including the plastic on my floor will sometimes rise now alittle bit, it's crazy.

far as temps i have them running at a cool 76, so the unit doesnt have to work that hard. I'm exhausting the unit into the attic. temps outside have been getting into the high 80's past few days.

i dont have any smell inside the house anymore since the growroom is being exhausted into the attic by the unit, which could be a really bad thing once the plants start flowering.

and i've thought about what you're saying about splitting the grows, but in order to do that i'd have to divide the room again, meaning the room would be set into 3 rooms then since the veg area is actually in the same room. I also couldnt see doing that being very convenient. i want to have 2 1000's and 2 600's in the flower area eventually, and i plan on air cooling the 2 1000's so hopefully with that the temps will remain maintainable.

apologize if i didnt answer any questions bro,

I exhaust into the attic from my porto-ac and even during massive stinkiness late in flower, it is never a problem--i never smell anything outside the house, and inside only if i open the door to the flower room. Relax and enjoy. And make sure you run the lights at night, cuz summer will make that 10K btus really struggle during the day.

Gentlemen that is the best advice so far. I knew what was coming so I picked up a 12,000 btu one hose portable at wally world this winter for 327.00. But my room is 8x20 with 2 1000 watters on a mover and in the early spring (outside 70-80) all was good now in later spring (outside 90-100) screw what ya got its freakin hot 88 ish. So as advised above when I flip to flower I will in fact run the lights at night and the temps will be in check.

Good post sir

one more thing: all this temp shit is SO MUCH easier to work out if you actually know the history of the temps in your rooms and outdoors. Lacrosse technology makes this awesome wireless weather "data logger" that stores 3000 data points of temp/rh every 5 minutes for the base and up to 3 remotes. It makes dialing in temp much more manageable. here it is, costs around $70 with one remote:

with this you can really nail when your lights should be off by, when they should come on, and when fans should turn on and off. plus you can really see the impact of your ac and its own on/off cycle, how it effects temp and sometimes even more importantly rh. an excellent tool.

What's up Dirty,

cheers for the response mate.... I am used to waiting a day or so usually so it was a pleasant suprised to tell the truth :D lol....

I hear ya about having to divide the room three ways mate, sounds like it would be a knightmare...... could always have the veg in the attic though  ahhhh guess you thought about this a while so enough with my bright ideas already.........

Dirty sez:

THCV has a nice sized grow, with some stanky strains and does'nt seem to have a problem exhausting into the attic although it's nothing a small fan & carbon filter would'nt sort out anyways.....

THCV whats up bro, does your AC have a filter inside? I notice while checking portable AC's out that some have built in carbon & HEPPA filters.... would explain the stankless attic... Running the lights at night is a definate plus man your spot in bro...

That Data logger looks great! Shit man..... I need one of those. Cheers for the heads up..... usually you'd have to have a laptop/pc logging all the data, probes programmes and the like aint cheap either ;)

Since a few of you dewds are in the know about AC could you help with a few Q's I got about a split portable unit over here....

http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=29174

would appreciate it man....

peace!

EDIT: THCV I just noticed that your AC is dual hose....

hi mampi- my ac does not have a filter, beyond the normal particle filter on intake. i find people really like to talk about filtering smells and how important it is, but i say design air flow safely (ie into the attic) and then see if you notice a smell before investing in expensive filters or ozone generators. attics are easy if there does end up being a problem--just throw a Blue Ball ozone generator into the attic and forget about it; the attic will do a great job of mixing the ozone and the stinky air. But, as i said, wait and see, why spend money if you don't have to.
