I thought carbon monoxide was what came out of the tailpipe of a car. I didn't do well in Chemistry so I could be wrong on this one...

You are correct, its CO(1). Dioxide is CO2.

Interesting. Apparently P. furiosus is and aquatic organism found around deep sea vents and is unique in several ways regarding the sources of carbon it can use.
