i just read in the paper that some folks were charged with possession of police scanners...i thought they were legal as long as they were in the home..these people were also charged with pot and meth..

They are. But since they were growing and manufacturing meth they can be charged if in the right jurisdiction. Just like having a gun. You can own weapons legally, but if there found around a grow/selling op you'll be charged for having them.
Just make sure if you use a scanner to find what the agencies in your area are using. Some are still analog and haven't changed over to digital as of yet. So if you have a digital scanner and they have analog radios your screwed. Also learn what frequencies they transmit on and program them so you can block out fire, code enforcement, and other unwanted city departments. Get the 10 codes,(very easy to get) so you'll know what they are saying.
Scanners are great to listen to on boring days.

Funny, I used to have a hand held one back in high school. We used to have it on when we would go to parties, or doing other mischief. It paid itself off in spades, because we always knew well in advance when they were coming to bust. Then there was an occasion of being pulled over. One of my dumb ass buddies didn't turn it off, & the cop heard it, and wasn't too pleased to learn we were on the same frequency as he was. Needless to say, scanner went bye bye.

problem is they block the vice/narc channels on those sites. you'll need a regular scanner so you ca get them

^^^ u cant pick up vice units on a normal scanner anyway they talk on restricted channels bro.

yes you can IF you know the frequency. If you don't know it then your correct. You'll have to punch it in yourself otherwise they don't pick them up.

Also realize that website you posted does not broadcast in real time.....they have a delay mechanism. Same applies to scanners. They have @ 1-2 minute delay to thwart 'criminals using them in real time.
If your local pd is using digital encrypted radios, which many are - it's unscannable. If they are "in the clear" or unencrypted, I'd bet a dollar to a donut that most/all sensitive drug investigation comm's are done via cell phones.

When a department goes digital they use a software program that is installed into each radio which allows the signals that is scrambled to be heard. So if you ever listen to a digital scanner and you hear a lot of weird screeching, etc when someone is talking that's the scrambled channel.
A competent hacker can design a program to be installed so you can listen. But thats the problem.....finding someone who is competent and knows how to do it and won't tell.
If your listening to analog, and they say go to such a such channel or go Tac, that means to go the unpublished frequency.
If you read a lot about other things besides weed you'll see a LOT of LEO are getting frustrated. Why? Because sophisticated criminals are using their own technology against them. One guy was busted in my area not to long ago and LEO had a shit fit. Dude had scanners not just in his house but hand held as well, and the police chief was quoted as saying "The reason we had such a hard time getting him is because he was using the weapons we have to fight crime against us. He was ALWAYS 2 steps ahead"
If you go to a website called Galls...DO IT FROM A SECURE LOCATION ON A DIFFERENT COMPUTER, you, me and the rest of the public can order a LOT of the items they carry no problem, no questions asked. With common sense and the right intel and technology you won't have much to worry about.
there is a lot of encryption but the popo being the fu's that they are an awful lot ends up "in the clear" so if you are interested in listening and things like this don't make you paranoid my all means get a scanner. the radio reference website is an excellent resource for scanner info.
