Elk shoots hunter

Published: 27th September 2007 18:30 CET

Swedish hunter Sven-Erik Rådlund is lucky to be alive after coming within inches of being shot in the head by an elk, Expressen reports.

The curious incident occurred after one of Rådlund's hunting partners had shot and wounded a bull elk in a forest in Ytterdal in northern Sweden.

When two of the dogs accompanying the hunting party approached the injured beast, the hunter decided to hold his fire.

"They stood beside the bull and started barking. I didn't dare shoot because that could have caused the dogs to start fighting," he told Expressen.

But just as he was about to put a leash on one of the dogs, the elk lurched forward and attacked the hunter with his eleven-pronged antlers.

The elk knocked Rådlund to the ground and aimed its antlers at his face. Fortunately, the hunter managed to grab hold of the antlers and steer the animal's head away.

But he was not out of danger yet. In a strange reversal of the usual order, the elk's hind legs came into contact with the rifle trapped under Rådlund's body and a shot was fired.

"It went just past my head," he said.

The tussle with the hunter sucked the last of the energy out of the wounded elk. Both man and beast remained on the forest floor for around 45 minutes before the elk retired to a more private spot and lay down to die.

Sven-Erik Rådlund went to hospital the next day to be treated for chest injuries and a swollen lip. But his brief ordeal left no lasting scars, either physical or emotional.

"I'll be back out hunting again," he told Expressen.

if we all went out and started shooting animals to feed ourselves we'd be the only things left.

No, there wouldn't be pussies who are scared to hunt down, kill, and clean their flesh. Pussies who mercilessly torture animals with shady practices, hormones and corrall them until they process them like a concentration camp, in the name of "food" for a fat slobby nation.. They would get naturally selected out of the geene pool, because either you hunt or you become the hunted, when it comes down to the wild.

The whole meat thing is also complete nonsense. My Grandmother is 95 and has been eating meat no probs man, her whole life. Wnat better proof? I think you young tree huggers need to do some independent thinking.

An ignorant friend of mine was telling me that he doesn't dive in the ocean to forage for food, because he respects the ocean too much. I told him he was full of shit, and was a hypocrite for saying that.. I told him commercial fishing and predatory fishing with nets and lines kill illegal, small, breeding, and defenseless fish in ridiculous numbers, and that he contributes directly to the raping of the ocean when he buys his weekly fish at VONS.

People who are brave enough to go out, stalk, hunt, kill, clean and use every piece of the animal for food and shelter are the most ecologically conscious and conservationalists there are. Every one else is blowing steam, with no intelligence or fact to back it up. Tree huggers are usually emotionally driven, not driven by logic..

but what can you do? some people are just stupid...

if 6 billion people tried to survive off plants alone, the world would be consumed by agriculture and the natural habitats of many species would be destroyed... "pests" would be eradicated, and THEN we will be the only things left on the planet.

There is nothing more natural or healthy than hunting and gathering

If you have to shoot something out of season for meat I dont have a problem with that. I came from a poor region in appalachia and the level of poverty can mind blowing. Shooting a deer, elk, moose, just for the antlers to me is lower than low.

Well, we raise much of our crops to feed the animals to get the beef. 10% going to the next level in food chain so to produce 100kg of beef needs about 1000kg food. We already have enough food for everyone on this planet but it's just unevenly spread and us fat ignorant westerners are throwing stuff away every second.

Eating meat is wrong but why on earth those animals taste so good?

This is all very true, but eating meat is not wrong.

We destroy thousands of acres of rainforests EVERY DAY for grazing land for cattle, and it is a waste of food to feed these cattle, as we oly get a 10% return on our input.

BUT there is plenty of food ALREADY in the rainforest, and the 1000 kg of feed required to produce the 100kg of meat is already in the rainforest. People need to return to hunting and gathering rather than relying on domestic species and agriculture to provide for them... this is destroying the world

i like meat, i was just saying we need to try and balance it out more since I see so many people eating meat as a staple in their diet when it indeed shoudnt be. 50% or more of your diet shouldnt be meat, hell i dont think 30% should be. plants are far superior producers of food and as i stated, is better for you. but its all alive. a plant is as much alive as a cow or etc. and we just have to eat them to survive.
and hunting/gathering cannot produce enough food. agriculture is a necessity these days, unless you are de-populating the planet...its just the agriculture can also be done in a much efficient manner and if organically done its much better for the environment...too bad it isnt and we've created GMO monsters already and have done irreversible damage...

youre right that agriculture is necessary to feed today's world. BUT we do need to de-populate, or at least control the population of the planet. Any population (rabbits, deer, AND HUMANS) will grow to the limits of the food supply, and there will always be people on the fringe starving to death... and if you feed the starving people, they live to reproduce and then there are even more starving people.

The secret is to control the population (maybe with birth control), keep everyone fed, and not destroy the earth for agriculture and grazing land. I think it can be accomplished with birth control, hunting and gathering, and small organic farms.

Well that last one was half joke. I'm currently looking to take archery lessons so maybe some day I can go hunting. Game is always better than farm meat (hormones, antibiotics & what not) and as I have said before it's important to keep game numbers in reasonable levels or else we have to get used to bears, wolves etc. "big guys" as our neighbors.

It's true what you say about food already being in (rain)forests but not for the whole population or cattle, also rainforest soil is not good for agriculture so added ferts are needed. A bit like peeing in your pants to stay warm.

One vote for harsh birth control! I haven't even met that many of the population but I already want to get rid of 30-50% for starters. :D

I hate poachers, when I was a kid I wanted to be an anti poacher soldier. Basically I would like to shoot them, if i win the lottery I may take up that hobby.

But then I would never shoot an animal, not into hunting.

Rather shoot bottles or cans, it's good enough for me.

.. Game is always better than farm meat ..

Depends on what its primary diet is. Corn fed deer taste vastly better than its siblings that feed on natural pines.

This is a little off topic but are male elks dangerous to humans like bull moose are this time of year?

Bull elk can be dangerous, but really rare towards humans. ....same w/ cow elk. (unless protecting young)

Bull moose can be dangerous ...again rare (I'd be more 'fraid of a cow moose w/ a calf)

The elk herd here live in peoples yards "literally"...they are everywhere and practically tame.

... I could go get u a pic of a wild elk in less than 15 minutes at anytime

....I get pissed when these peeps around here buy hay and feed them in their driveway (when they eat hay they can't digest their normal diet properly) (people always wanna fuk w/ wildlife)...that shit bugs me.

Elk are pretty harmless...but I woulden't wanna piss one off...they do have the potential to hurt ya bad.

^Thanks. Surviorman on the Discovery channel made it sound like bull moose were really dangerous during mating season.
