Four arrested in xxxxxx on poaching charges
By xx
09/26/2007

Instead of bagging a really magnificent trophy, four men suspected of illegally taking a six-point elk last week in xxxxx may have racked up some really expensive trouble.

Currently free on $2,500 bond each are xxyy residents John Keith Johnson, 22, and Larry C. Losch, 26, plus 20-year-old Anthony Shrout and 54-year-old Kimberly Shrout of Lockport, Ill.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, the Colorado Division of Wildlife received a tip regarding a dead bull elk lying at the corner of Soda Creek Drive and Hacienda Road in the hills about a mile west of Bergen Park. The responding DOW officers determined the animal had been killed with an arrow and, assuming the hunters would return for their prize, staked out the site.

Under cover of darkness, a pickup truck deposited three men armed with tools and lights near the fallen giant and drove away. The men quickly cleaned and butchered the animal and apparently signaled the driver of the truck to return. When he did, the DOW crew sprang its trap.

According to the Jefferson County district attorney’s office, Kimberly Shrout may have been licensed to hunt big game, but with a rifle, not a bow, and only in an entirely different game-management unit, and only during an entirely different season.

The most serious of several misdemeanor charges lodged against the men is violation of 9-year-old Samson’s Law. Named for a celebrity Estes Park bull elk illegally killed in 1995, Samson’s Law tacks an additional $10,000 penalty on anyone convicted of poaching big-game animals with six points or more.

The men are scheduled to appear in Jefferson County Court on Oct. 23.

assholes!

For those that havent seen a 6 point bull elk...this is what these assholes shot illegally.

imho if youre going to eat the beast, and its not endangered (or even close)... there is nothing wrong with poaching. **** the DNR.

cooked cook

bake at 420 until nicely toasted
Though I have poached some salmon in my time (poach-
To cook food gently in liquid just below the boiling point when the liquid's surface is beginning to show some quivering movement. The amount and temperature of the liquid used depends on the food being poached. Meats and poultry are usually simmered in stock, fish in COURT-BOUILLON and eggs in lightly salted water, often with a little vinegar added. Fruit is often poached in a light SUGAR SYRUP. Poaching produces a delicate flavor in foods, while imparting some of the liquid's flavor to the ingredient being poached. )
I would NEVER poach an elk. Elk is best grilled or broiled to a nice medium rare or medium. Some of those larger cuts could be roasted or braised. :yummy:
just pay for a hunting license and take that big mofo in season....then kill it and grill it!

i want to eat them, not deplete their population to the point of extinction. payin the DNR for a bit of conservation aint the worst thing.

I had "half" agreed w/ that mentality most my life man.

I still agree w/ it on a whole if you live in a place like alaska or parts of canada..or sim. other places.

when you are in the middle of the united states...every single bumfuk cannot poach "trophy animals'' for "said food".

its easy enuf to get a game lisc. and be able to take game legally (unless your a felon)

"Jack D" what would happen to wildlife w/out regulation?

wildlife regulation has its uses. In my state there are more deer than people, and CWD is getting out of control. I eat probably 90%+ wild game, mostly deer. I dont see the problem with shooting deer for food, and I dont see why I should have to pay $$ to shoot a deer, they should be paying me for keeping them off the roads. And honestly, Im not in it for the rack... Id kill a doe with equal meat just as soon as a buck (long as theres no yearlings around).

Ive never poached elk, only deer cause theres sooo many.... well and turkey too. But that is a magnificent creature. If I killed it, I'd eat its heart while it was still beating

a small footnote.........elk in these parts are tame...they are used to people and even cars...these weren't hunters...they were almost literally shooting in a zoo

When I was a kid growing up in Idaho, we poached several deer. I have never shot a trophy buck, as I have only killed does. They taste a lot better. We grew up poor, but didn't know it. We killed as many as 7 deer a year, raised a calf for slaughter, raised rabbits, had a garden and a lot of fruit, berries etc. Sometimes you do what you have to do to stay alive.

I wouldn't have killed Samson, but if his girlfriend got that close, she would be on the grill in no time.

They have big claws and fangs to do that.
If you live in an area where there are animals higher than humans on the food chain, like in tiger or polar bear country, you have to take them seriously and carry a firearm. Even seriously wounded animals can chase humans a long way.

Dead-on, SensimilliaWolf. Our brains are the ONLY advantage we humans have over the animal world. They can outrun, out-swim, out-climb, out-everything us, except out-think us. Walking around in the wilderness without adequate protection (read: FIREARMS) is asking for trouble.

 That being said, poachers are asshats who should have the book thrown at 'em. It's one thing to manage nuisance/hazard species, it's quite another with prize elk. As for those asshats in Africa who use chainsaws to remove the horns from rhinos and tusks from elephants which are still ALIVE, I'm glad that the park services shoot these guys first, and ask questions later. Unfortunately, the asshats who de-fin sharks and pitch the rest overboard aren't any better!

I used to shoot deer in my yard without a second thought because they were artificially introduced to this small island and have been wreaking havoc ever since. Since there's no bag limit all season, 'poaching' in this case is merely taking them without a hunting license. I always ate what I shot, and was very generous with neighbors and friends. (Fish in the summer, venison and pheasant in the fall, ducks and geese in the winter, and littleneck clams almost year-round!)

BTW, Yukon, I'm pretty sure that's a 12-pointer. Beautiful, magnificent beast, at any rate....

Looks tastey, with some rub on a grill, sausages, too bad they had to poach the thing, I bet some smaller females would taste alot better...

I agree that what they did was ****ed, and in this case I wouldn't have agreed with taking that buck, but I also agree with others that you should be able to hunt for food anytime if need be.
