inline duct fan!!!!

cbf

How big is that thang? They are usually louder, push less air, etc.
If you're serious about growing more than one harvest, get a real fan...

They are quiet, and work much more efficiently, and are made for that reason..

the first pic looks like a booster for longer than average duct runs. it probably wouldn't do well alone with a scrubber.

they sell those in-duct fans in like home depot..its not very powerful..like a good deskfan...prob would work on thin or small carbon scrubbers, or to vent heat outwards or bring in some outside air..

but for scrubbers..

the vortex. even the smaller 174cfm .. if pointed at you is like a hurricane of wind, and it kinda sounds like a jet engine stand alone, so you need to muffle the rushing air.. and use insulated ducting..when i used it i wrapped it in winter coats and it just becomes a low humming sound (this is if the actual fan is also inside your grow or near). you need that kinda power to pull the air thru a decent sized carbon filter as it puts up some resistance.. you won't be able to keep your eyes open if its blowing at your face from even 5 ft away..its like stickin your head out a car window at decent speeds..they are powerful enuff to be put in your attic to exhaust and have a insulated duct run all the way down to ur basement, and it will still be able to pull the air up from down there.. and all you would hear probably is the sound of some moving air..like when air comes out of your central ac vent.

I'm using a 4ft x 1ft 8 2ft space. Do you think I could pull through a small homemade carbon filter?

The fan you've posted is an inline booster, and as stated in this thread is useless for your purposes. A 4" 172CFM Vortex would be a much better inline fan for you. It will be able to pull the required air to scrub that space.

couldn't tell ya, man.. never used an in-line in that situation.. the carbon puts up a wall man, like resistance force, put your fist in front of your mouth and suck in, you need some muscle to pull the air in.. or thru carbon, especially if its 1-2 inches thick. say u hook up a vortex 174cfm to a scrubber, i know it ain't putting out 174cfm at the exhaust end, alot of its cfm is weakened down cause of the resistance... you put a desk fan on it, and u ain't moving nothing..or maybe compare it to torque? the vortex at 174 just has strong deep pulling power..muffin fan at same cfm blows alot of wind, but once it gets resistance, its putting out 2cfm .. all i can say is try it... you can always return shit to home depot..

edit: find/replace 174 with 172 (duh)

i've read threads in the past where people were using the "stanley blowers" i think they are also available from home depot and lowes and pretty cheap like $30, with success.. i never used one and can't comment on noise they generate..if that's going to be an issue or not for you .. top pic looks more like a squirrel cage fan? not as strong and noisy with a weird square connect? bottom two are more of the in-line vortex style turbine fan, which would be the better choice.. i dunno man just go with a vortex, it works, and lasts.. 5 year warrenty 24/7 operation.

this is stanley blower rigged to work with ducting...

props to whoever made that pic, from another site..

Notwithstanding Vortex or Can as first choices... I'd take #2, or maybe #3 depending on the the CFM and static pressure. #1 is gonna be loud.

The booster might work with a small grow. Say 150 watts or less but, I wouldn't trust it. The inlines and squirrel cages are DAMN loud. If stealth is a concern either the fan, or visitors, need to be locked out of the grow room.

I use this blower, 95cfm, $75.00 shipped and it is audible inside a ~15 cu ft cab.

http://cgi.ebay.com/95-cfm-blower-Hydrofarm-cooling-exhaust-fan-Free-Ship_W0QQitemZ110348589502QQcmdZViewItemQQptZHydroponics_Seed_Starting?hash=item110348589502&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

I think it's rated 29db. The vortex type is more like 40 (but moves more air.) I put a speed controller on the blower cause full speed is ridiculous. It pulls a diy mesh pencil holder scrubber on lowest speed, would do even better with a larger scrubber. Insulated duct to the attic or underneath floor makes it a little quieter. The vortex/centrifugal fans have better bearings. They'll last longer before making noise. Vortex/scrubber application is straight, blower/scrubber is right angle. The square exhaust on the blower is easy to mount inside a cab.
