Please don't be mites..... Webs but no bugs?

Hey Everyone,

I am having a freaky morning. I had a dream about spider mites last night. Seriously! I woke up this morning and could recall it clear as can be.

Then I went out for my morning check in the garden. Eeeks!! I see a few spider web strands going leaf to leaf at the top of one of my plants in my veg space.

I looked closely and do not see any signs of damage.

I carefully clipped the top of the plant removing the visible webs. I then inspected each of the leaves under a dissection microscope and did not see a single mite or mite egg on any of them.

As this space is sealed from my flower area I set off a Dr. Doom just in case.

What do you all think? Have you seen web spinning critters other than mites on your plants? Have you seen mite webs before widespread appearance of adult mites?

Thanks

FJ

I have seen spider mites in the past. They (and their eggs) are very easy to spot with the microscope.

When I have seen them in the past I saw small spots the looked like dust on the leaves. Then a few spots of damage to leaves. When viewed with the naked eye the damage was minimal. Just by chance I looked under the microscope and the mites were very obvious. I never saw any webs.

Today I see some webs but after viewing every leaf that had webs on it under the microscope I see nothing.

I was just getting ready to move this girl into flower :(

Yah every time I've seen webs there was an obvious infestation. .. plus they don't make long leaf to leaf type webs, more wrapped around the buds

Here's what I think:

I have seen web spinning critters other than spider mites on my plants. Those critters are spiders.

Spider mites build their webbing when they are present in large numbers. Your inspections would have confirmed their presence.

Don't worry, but keep an eye on the undersides of your leaves.

Spider webs are kind of thin and stretched out. Spider mite webs are all thick and wrapped around/clumped up. It would be hard to mistake one for the other if you were specifically paying attention to that. I've definitely had spider webs on plants before but only outdoors. If you saw any serious webs in a sealed indoor room I would become very worried about mites.

These were thin and random leaf to leaf.

I had trimmed the affected leaves and inspected them under the scope. No visible bugs.

I checked again today and there are no new webs or any sign of bugs.

I think you are good to go, man.

Always keep an eye out though.
