Platinum LED P600 vs Sun Systems 315LEC

LED tech is still shaky at best, but I've heard a lot of great things about the Platinum LED P600:

http://platinumgrowlights.com/products/p600

Most of the positive reviews I've read from various other forums. It draws ~360watts and claims to have the output of a 800watt HPS and would be perfect for a 2x4 SCROG area. In the link above he does a PAR test on it and it reads pretty well.

So I designed a room with these in mind (electrical draw and heat are big factors for me) but when I went down to the hydro shop I was advised to stay away from all LEDs and to try the new Sun Systems 315w LEC:

https://www.sunlightsupply.com/shop...system-lec-315-light-emitting-ceramic-fixture

I've been reading everywhere since, and read a few threads here on IC that these are the next big thing and they put out the most complete spectrum of light. They've been likened to a 600watt HPS and pull a similar draw as the LEDs.

But if the 315s are like 600watt HPS and the P600s are like 800watt HPS... Wouldn't the P600s be a better choice?

I've had mixed luck with 600watt HPS. Ideally I'd go for a 1000watt HPS. Would the LEC's be able to pull off the flower density of a 100watt or would I have to spring for a 630?

I'm placing an order for 16 so its a big chunk of change. Want to be sure I'm doing the right thing!!

Thanks all

I wouldn't trust any LED companies comparisons unless they used Cree or Vero and had the exact BIN. There are several new companies using COB technology such as Heavenbright.
I have used the LEC and it's comparable to a 600w I think, and the effiecencie is almost comparable to an LED in terms of Amps pulled and wattage pulled. It also will have more penetration power.

TBH LED you are going to need to SCROG or Lollipop the crap out of your plants if you want a decent yield.
I would personally measure the pay-out/break even plan with the electricity usage vs initial price, and revisit it with LEC #'s in mind instead of HPS...when you do that, it becomes even more clear to me that the LEC is the winner of you are ordering multiple.
I would also not do the double hoods, I would just do multiple 315s like how you would plan for LED
Hope this helps!

This will be an interesting comparison. From my experience with the LEC 315, you will not yield the same as with a 600 watt HPS.

I recently completed a grow with the LEC 315. The quality was fantastic, but the yield was not very good. I found the plants grew very fast, finished faster, and started frosting up much sooner than HPS. This was probably due to the great light spectrum. The only problem is that the light couldn't penetrate like a 600 watt HPS. Top buds were very nice, but still not as large as those under a 600 watt HPS.

I still consider the LEC lights some of the best out there.

yeah i like my platinum p450 its def not as good as a 600w hps like they say though. personaly if i had my cash back id build my own! i have a post called soo many leds. and this guy dion (i think thats his user) posted about building your own. he has a tutorial for building leds and even where to buy everything you need for em. when i go to buy the other p450 i need for my 4x4 tent im going to build a light for the whole tent instead and use the p450 for my veg tent:) im impressed with leds. but mainly because i cant have any spikes in my electrical bill. if youre gonna buy leds. save that extra 500$ and get apache tech:) hope i helped:) namaste

very good points here.

@Vitamingreeninc - I do plan on doing SCROG trees no matter what, to keep my plant count low... if I went with the P600s id do 20 2x4 SCROGs and if I went with the LEC id do 16 3x3 SCROGs. If I went with a 1kw HPS I'd do 8 4x4 SCROGs. So penetration wouldn't be as big of an issue.

@FunkBomb - very interesting. Quality is my priority, I want to give my patients the best of the best. Though I would love for yield to be there as well! What was your yield with your 315? grow style, area and strain?

@lotus - I was looking at the 450 before I decided to step up to the 600... From what people are saying on 420 they are great lights. I also spoke to the head of the company and he seemed really sure of the results, he told me if I didnt like them after 90 days I could return them no questions asked (thats a good sign right there if you ask me). Building my own would be a ton of fun but I need 20 of them and I need them within two weeks :) I'll check out your thread tonight though!

Lotus710 - Check out these two LED companies: Pacific Light Concepts and American Green Truth LED. They look to have good prices with good light output.

MMJCali - The grow was in a tent (39"x39") with five Female Seeds Pure AK from seed. Vegged 30 days or so and flowered out ~50-55 days. Grown in air pots the entire time with organic soil with liquid and dry fertilizers. They were grown as trees and only topped once the week before the lights to flipped to 12/12. Got 6 dry ounces off 5 plants with A+ quality and C- quantity.

@FunkBomb oh wow that's a lot less than I was expecting. How was the flower density compared to an HPS? some people were claiming 1.4 gpw but I don't really think I should be taking that risk. I've yielded double that from a 600, I can buy 16 600s for a quarter of the price and yield double...

Considering 10 1kw HPS over 20 2x4 grow sites now with 4' parabolic reflectors... I'd run two separate 30AMP 240v circuits, and my 36kBTU Mini SPlit should be able to cool them properly... possibly run remote ballasts to the outside...

The flower density wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything like the density from a 600 or 1k HPS. Not even close. Although HID light is inefficient it produces both quality and quantity.

The real future for grow light technology is LED. This is a good example:

i sprung for 2 p600's and after just a few days i see my girls enjoy the funny colored light, i was wearing some blue lenses and could see some crazy colors in that lamp. do others wear anything special on the eyes?

Throughout my entire life I have seen seen a red sun or a blue sun, or a burple sun

The sun I know that grows our food is white, though depending on the season it will appear a bit more blue or a bit more red.

Now, I bought into the lie ~ 5 years ago, but soon learned not to trust big ads in high-times

By far my preference is for a predominantly white light, which is also eye friendly

Come by my thread to see 2 using the latest thinking in action

I am fully in a state of indecision so much to chose from more learning must be done but i'm going in the lec way

A very good and safe choice

That said, the 315w is comparable to an Amare Technologies SE 220 ($695), which sends all its' light directly to the canopy, PLUS, has separate veg and flowering o/o switches
