Plants aren't drinking water quick enough

Well I've got a thread here about my little grow I've got going... Its during winter time atm and I think it is having something to do with my plants not drinking water quick enough. I'm only giving them one cup of water a day just as lights go on, i have slowed down the watering on the worst cases as some of them haven't needed a watering for about 3 days which is over all going to affect my yield.. So my contributing factors are my plants not being in drip trays (i know i should have them but i am on a very low budget to get me started) The plants are also sitting strait on the ground which must be a huge temperature sucker (a big wooden crate can fix that)... So my question is, is it the cold affecting my plants water drinking capabilities? I can't really bring a heater down as my power is pretty costly as it is...
Thanks in advance.

are they healthy other than the water consumption? I've had a couple runs where in the middle of flowering they would just slow down their drinking (70-80F) and it confuses the hell out of me, but there was no lii effect to the crop... so I don't know what to tell ya, could be temps, could just be the plant...

What are your temp? RH?

Thanks for that Alien Dawg I've got pics under the 400w section but nothing detailed enough for you to be able to see the dirt.. I'll get some better pictures up tonight.

Thanks too Space Ghost, they are healthy as like you just said it is worrying me but they aren't showing any sign of being unhappy... I'm not sure what my temps are I don't have a thermometer :frown:. Sorry not sure what you mean by RH, I am on the mission of getting one though as I'm curious to my lows and highs..
Once again thanks for all the advice everyone....

Hahaha thanks for that. Well I've taken a picture all it really shows is the growth because I am pretty shite at trying to get a decent one (picture that is), what iI have noticed is they are drinking alot more I'm not sure why maybe because I made it a little warmer in there for them during dark (insulation around the box).

They are 4 weeks 3 days old and currently 11th day into bud..

Your ladys look alot like my SSH in Scrog

Letz just say it didnt turn out so good.

Is your soil dence ? Seems forever wet.
That is what happened to me. Never dried out and took
a slow roll ta death.
I used moss in my soil and think that was the main problem.
Then there is VPD which seemed to add to my problem.
Looked like mag-def then heat issiue into overwatering and so on.
I believe the plant just had no way of drinking all the water
and that let the nutes build up in the soil.
I used fan's to try and dry em out but my RH was high and
that locked the water in.

How to fix? Sorry bro- not sure. Mine did not do so well.

I have been reading up on VPD
Another way of thinking about VPD is the atmospheric demand for water or the ‘drying power’ of the air.

I have some notes on VPD on my link.
I am thinking had I RH & temps in the right range early on
It would have saved my SSH.

my advise would be to figure out how to dry your soil
and let them roots breeth a little.

Im no pro by any means so take my thoughts with a grain
of salt.

Hope it works outz for ya.

Hey man. The rate of water movement through a plant depends on the rate of water transpiration from the leaf, which is influenced by the environment.

So make sure your air temp, humidity, and ventilation are dialed in all these things go hand in hand. Looked at your pics from your thread and the leaves look wet couldnt really tell. Do you spray them?

Also if you dont have enough roots, they are not going to "suck" up water as fast. I have seen this when transplanting from small containers to large ones. Till the roots fill in the pot sometimes you dont have to water for up to a week. Like a 6" to a 3-5 gallon container.

@ Alien Dawg they just started sucking up the water and are doing much better... I think a big reason is that the canopy of leaves are so thick that no light gets to the roots (maybe fresh circulated air to). I'm only using a cheap soil from the local shop around these ways its not to bad but yes it is a little dense but i think the cold air has helped that. I appreciate your input alot. I want to move the grow a foot higher off the ground so i'll be doing that today.
@apep yep the leaves were wet in one or two of the pics (spider mite problem) but it is down to a minimal. It was pretty humid last night though and the leaves did look and feel droopy... Thanks alot for your input to.

I would like to add that instead of just watering one cup a day. Try giving a proper thorough watering and letting it dry almost completely before next watering. Makes the roots search for moisture and spread out in the container instead of wanting to stay shallow.

Getting them off of the floor may help them to dry out faster. Good Luck

Hi. I have pretty much the same situation (not a problem) after I transplanted from a small container to 10lit. Plants are growing well but I haven´t watered for a week. I built up the medium differntly than earlier, I use pretty rich soil which is once layered with clay pebbles and another layer of the same at the bottom of the.

For once I might be doing something right :)

First things first I would get those pots off the floor....cold roots don't work as hard as warm roots.

From the pics, it looks like you may be over watering....I see your adding a cup of water a day, have you tried letting the pot completely dry out between waterings?

I find if I let them dry out a little bit and feed them only a little bit of water I can force them to take up whatever I give them....

with a thorough and less frequent waterings, the roots will develope better and fill out the container.

btw, you want cooler roots. :)

do not water every day....right now you are overwatering them, you should only have to water them once every 3 days to a week...by watering them every day you are drowning and suffocating the roots, this will lead to pythium root rot and will destroy your crop in a very short time...

when watering a fully developed plant with a good root system that fills the pot, dont be afraid to water till run off, then wait till they are light as a feather before watering again....

Hey everyone thanks alot for the advice so far. I will definitely change my routine of watering, i'll let them all dry out as much as possible and then water with half a cup and see how that goes. The reason i give them a cup as it is, is so i can be with them as much as possible with out actually having to do anything to them so i'd like to keep it slightly that way and if they don't like the half a cup then i will go back to watering thoroughly waiting for it to dry and etc...
Good luck on the grow to Piel hope everything goes well and you are rewarded with many many tasty buds.
Stay safe everyone

Sorry Joe fresh your post just came in as i was writing mine.. I will skip straight to the thorough watering then waiting 'til dry, as it looks like it couldn't be stressed anymore
Once again much respect everyone.

To maie it really simple always have your plant in the proper sized container for its size.I start of in 4 inch pots until rhey are 6 -10 inches tall then veg good in 2 gal and flower in 3 gallon
