Plant Science..What’s New, What’s Going on? GMO’s, Polyploids, Tissue Culture, DNA…

As a plant scientist myself, I was quite surprised as a new guy around here how much plant science was being utilized, understood, discussed, etc. I have heard so many things pop-up from thread to thread that have serious scientific background and/or basis, and it had me wondering….who are we here, I assume a few amateur and professional scientists are among us, based on what I read. The nature of our beast however, is that as a professional we cannot always cross over into this world of plant science without the scrutiny of our other employers. Make no mistake…I feel I work for the enemy, but they have also supported much of my education and access to the tools of the trade. And like the ‘Art of War’ teaches us; when we keep our enemies close, we can learn from them--steal some of their plans or weapons to level the field when needed. The big ag companies do spend billions on plant science and while none of us should try to operate our spiritually/morally grounded (hopefully) grows as they do their international companies, with all the waste and weirdness and lack of concern for the environment, the crop, the plant itself, and mostly the final consumer--we can learn a lot from their research.

Some of the things I do regularly for the big Ag companies, I wondered if folks out there with similar backgrounds or interests were also doing to their home grows. I experiment a lot, and wondered what others were up to. Also, I thought this could be a pretty cool reference if we can get a bunch of science and scientists on a thread to discuss this stuff and try to learn and teach and explore new directions. A lot of inspiration and research happens at the GRASS-roots level. As I witness here on this forum, there are some highly skilled master gardeners up here, regardless of education or background or credentials. I was hoping this thread could be a jump-off for some of the things I have heard people asking about on various threads that could be expanded on by those who understand them and perhaps questioned or debunked by those with real-world experience that can say…”Hey, that sounds good on paper….but it still didn’t kill my spider mites!”….lol

Some of the stuff I have been asked about and have interest and/or experience with are things like:

GMO’s….is anyone working in this direction…..? Any franken-weed being ‘built’ out there? Anyone that can or will talk about it……would be cool just to know what people are trying or thinking about trying>
Sports….? What have you seen, isolated, explored……anomalies that can be used for future breeding projects….variegations/chimeras….natural polyploids….dwarfs….auto-flowering…unique pigmentation...oddities like this…
Breeding….especially from a genetic point of view…more of the science versus the pollen-chuck. There is so much to be gleaned from genetics study that can advance our crosses….all of big AG spends big $ on the geneticists because they hold the answers to what the future can hold….what have you seen, learned, theorized or studied that might help us all breed a better strain for the good of all us folks>?
Tissue Culture…anyone trying it? Doing it regularly? Got a recipe or information that you want to share…or questions on the hows and whys?
Sap Testing….i was asked if I did it. YES! Anyone here doing it on a regular basis and want to share their experience with relations to how it applies to OUR plant?
DNA analysis…anyone have access? Know of labs doing any work on it?
Labs….any legal ways to obtain the info we need?
Testing, Troubleshooting, Growing, Nutrients, Propagation, Polyploidy, GA3/hormones/steroids, Delivery systems, Virus, Bacteria, Pests, soil science, botany……so many roads to travel down….not sure where to start…except to say….
HEY! I’m a plant scientist….are there more of us out there…professional or amateur….what is your theory?….what is your project?….let’s talk!

Quite a bit of interest in it, but haven't seen anyone use it for cannabis on any of the forums. Honestly cannabis is so easy to clone, tissue culture would just be a lot of extra work.

Though if as a plant scientist you have access to the correct formulations of nutrients/hormones for tissue culture of cannabis, you could do the community a service by posting them. I could see tissue culture being useful for maintaining a large library of mother plants in a small space, and perhaps for sharing plants via the mail more stealthily.

GMO's are a bit beyond me scientifically, not to mention that given the scrutiny (or lack thereof) regarding BT crops and their apparent health risks, I think the idea needs some trial and error period with the institutions for fine-tuning before even thinking about messing with our plant. Given the risk of gene-pool contamination due to pollination, the potential could be quite severe if something went amiss and "escaped" so to speak. Tissue culture however, interests me more and I have done a bit of experimentation with a large degree of success. Given the time frame however, I didn't find it to be useful, though I do see the potential and agree that it is quite impressive. The sterility needed for success makes it somewhat impractical for general use though I thought. You also mentioned an interest in unusual characteristics...I've been working on stabilizing what I believe works out to be the overproduction of chromatin in a couple of strains through a series of crosses for several years with some interesting results. I have been growing for 16 years now, always viewing it as science. I'll be watching this thread and probably will contribute occasionally. Good idea ogP91fam, I like where you're going with this idea. Here's a couple of links that are fun: http://www.physorg.com/news95605211.html and http://jxb.oxfordjournals.org
I'm also curious if anyone has tried Liquid Light with Penetrator or Saturator or whatever Dutch Masters is calling it these days. I've been using it since they only had the foliatech line back in the day with killer results consistently for years. Just wondered if anyone else also thought so. Also, anyone care to explain what Phosphoload does or rather how it does what it does. Same question for Bloombastic (I suspect the two are quite similar) Gravity from Humboldt Nutrients seems to do similar things and it's a kelp based formula, which doesn't strike me as a phosphorus source particularly. Mycorrhizal inoculation provides noticeable results for me depending on brand since it seems that certain formulations are less stable than others and it seems that some brands are able to withstand greater ph fluctuation and greater nutrient concentration. I was using Advanced Nutrients Tarantula and Piranha and Voodoo Juice, but they are pretty pricey considering you have to use all three if you're going to follow their program. Lately I hit upon Aurora Innovations "Orgeonism XL" which seems at least as good as the three combined. Anyone else have any thoughts on inoculation?

Added white-space, in case anyone wanted to read the post without going blind, as there is some interesting content:

Ahh, much better. Regarding:

The sterility seems fairly trivial to me - amateur mycologists and orchidologists seem to do OK in that area. Plenty of info on DIY Laminar flow hoods, and clean room/area preparation. Perhaps you would be willing to write a TEK, detailing hormone/nutrient combos that work well for cannabis?

Miles ahead of the curve... such is the problem of genius of a era... all the greats are considered idiots in their own time...once they catch up your usually long gone and unable to receive the praise you should have enjoyed...

Not being accepted in main stream society we search for people who understand us

Being tested and found worthy of membership you would think you would be in company of like minded intellectual beings...such is the hope...what you may find is a air of snobby geekdom that lacks a certain aspect of humanity...

Facts 6 out of 10 people suffer from a mental disorder and many never get treated or even diagnosed
Due to the stigma surrounding the issue its often more comfortable to self test using a questionaire
A simple yes no true false test you take in your own home, then maybe if your disorder is treatable
You could try medication or find a cannabis strain the helps you self medicate properly.

Then retest and see if the cannabis helps your symptoms improve
What does each terpene or chemical help with, and which strains are good for what issues?
