Plant problems

I have been experiencing some issues lately that have me stumped, I have checked many abuse charts and guides and still cannot determine what can be happening. I have been cultivating indoors since 2000, started out without any issues, huge harvests, bought a house in 2003 and it all started going downhill since. Shortly after moving into my house in ’03, my yields started to drop, cloning was less productive to the point where I stopped altogether and have been working strictly off seeds. Things I have tried since then is: replacing all of my bulbs; installing a fresh air system duct; using a variety of dirts, not much of a choice around here, Miracle Grow seems to be the medium of choice for the local stores; and adjusting pH, water from my tap produces a pH level of 8.15, I was using the inexpensive fish aquarium pH tester for a couple of years, I have recently purchased (within the last 4 weeks) a digital pH water tester and soil pH tester. With the digital meter being more accurate than the aquarium tester, I realized that I needed to add more pH down to get to a level of around 6.0. This still does not seem to fix the problem.

On 3/6 I dropped 13 seeds in Peat Pods, the result was 9 seedlings , I placed them under my flouros for a couple of weeks, during week 2-3 the problem began, I did not have my digital pH tester at this point, so they started out with water that was probably high 7s. Unfortunately I do not have many pictures, but “2009.03.25 - Grow 1 - 01.JPG” shows one of my plants, notice the yellowing along the center vein. Picture “2009.04.07 - Grow 1 - 01.jpg“ shows my plants on 4/7. All of the lower leaves are dead, very brown and crispy. Some plants are drooping. I know drooping can be caused by over-watering; I do wait until the dirt is totally dry before watering. Picture “2009.04.17 - Grow 1 - 01.JPG” shows what one of them currently looks like, the yellowing of the veins appears to have stopped but overall color of the plant is not a nice dark green, I have been watering with a consistent pH of 6 since I received my digital meter.

On 4/8 I dropped 12 seeds in Peat Pods, the result this time was all 12 seeds germinating, I had my digital pH tester by this point and have been dropping the pH to just above 6 since day one. I was hoping that was why I had a 100% germination rate and thought that I had finally figured out what my problem was. My seedlings are now entering the stage where I noticed all of my past grows started to take a turn for the worst. Picture “2009.04.17 - Grow 2 - 01.JPG”

I'd start with better soil to begin with and you need to add perlite to it for better drainage. The 3rd pic look like root problems on 1 plant for sure. I use Fox Farms Chunky perlite if I can get it, then add my own stuff to it. There are several soil recipes on this forum, this is a good start http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=23970 Good luck

Not sure why, but when I originally posted this thread, not all of the information was posted, I had composed the mesage offline and then copy/pasted the information. Here is the information that did not make it:

  • Meduim: soil (usually Miracle Grow or Shultz, most recently Jiffy Organic Seed starter mix)
  • Light: T5 flouro; 400 watt HPS light system, recently replaced bulb with a MH conversion bulb
  • Atmosphere: 75-85 degrees, 50-70% humidty
  • Watering: on average once a week, usually when the soil is very dry
  • pH: most recently, 6, in the past, my guess is anywhere from mid to upper 7
Updated picture of grow 2 plant (2009.04.17 - Grow 2 - 01.jpg). There has been obvious growth since the 17th, the new growth is showing some signs of yellowing and the older leaves are starting to brown on the tips. This particular plant was moved under a 400 watt MH light on the 17th so the browning may be due to heat, the light is 2-3 feet above this plant.

I do believe that the recent digital pH meter I have purchased and the fact that I was not using enough pH down has helped some, still not convinced it will be the cure-all.

Any Ideas....

Your at 85degrees and 70% humidity and switched over to a much hotter light ,I can see why she is not doing so well, can you get your temps and humidity down some and I wouldn't wait till its dry to water again maybe just the top part of soil a bit dry should do. Why the switch from the T5 to the 400??? The T5 you can get right up on her to veg and get some nice tight nodes. Hope that helps abit..ndn

ndnguy, thanks for the reply:

Heat has always been my enemy, I had purchased a portable A/C unit for the grow area a few years back, unfortunately, that unit died on me last year. $450 down the drain. I am looking at replacing that, the 85 degrees is in the grow box with the MH bulb, the plants under the T5 are outside of the box and and it is about 10 degrees cooler. The browning occurring on the previous post is of a plant under the MH, so I think it makes sense that heat is causing that, would it also cause the yellowing on the middle of the leave, that started while under the T5. I have always started my seedlings and kept them under a flouro for the first few weeks, then moved under MH light. You saying I should keep them under the T5 while vegging?

Happy 4/20
