Pity the billionaire: it's expensive being rich

"It's a hard life if you don't weaken," lamented Arthur Seaton, the hero of the 1960 film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, summing up the lot of the working class as he looked forward to another week " sweating his guts out" over his lathe in a Nottingham factory. How times have changed.

Now, it seems, it is the rich who have it hard. A survey shows the wealthiest members of society are now engaged in a rearguard effort to maintain their gilded lifestyles, bedevilled with runaway inflation in the luxury goods sector.

Those of us not in the market for an executive box at Stamford Bridge or a case of Chateau Lafite Rothschild may struggle to feel sorry for the super-rich, but for them it is no laughing matter. The conclusion of the latest Stonehage Affluent London Living Index (Salli) was surprise at "how expensive it is being rich", with luxury goods rising in price three times faster than their more mundane consumer counterparts.

There are two reasons for the present Salli inflation rate of 6 per cent, said Robby Hilkowitz, executive director of the Stonehage Group which helps the world's super-wealthy manage their incomes. "Global wealth is growing at an unprecedented rate and as it increases they want more luxury goods to meet their lifestyle needs. With status items, the more expensive they become the more desirable they become.

"The second reason is that the supply of many of these items, from fine wines to Chelsea tickets, are finite but the amount of money chasing them is going up."

There are some 800 US dollar billionaires in the world, a figure that rose by 15 per cent last year. They are among the class of ultra-high net worth individuals with a personal fortune in excess of £25m of net investable assets. The second tier covered by the survey, so-called high worth individuals with more than £5m to spare, grew by 20 per cent.

Mr Hilkowitz believes the growth in the luxury market remains sustainable despite mounting fears that the credit crunch will lead to a general economic recession. He said many of his clients had already made their money and were living off the proceeds of their fortunes although the rate of luxury inflation was likely to reduce to twice that of the normal index compared to the current level of threefold.

Trust me when i say london has deteriorated over the last 10 years. Parts of it are even no go areas now which is pretty much unheard of since the 60's and even then it was done with honour unlike now. I was glad to see the back of it. My bikes were constantly stolen. People often trying to pick my pocket which led to fights and now you dare not fight back because if you dont get stabbed at the time you get arrested later as defending yourself is against UK law.

I'm ashamed to have been born here at the moment and refuse to call myself british, english or whatever the politically correct term for me is.

I am however pretty pleased to hear the rich are getting stuffed too. At least they feel our pain now!

you get half your hard earned cash swiped if your rich and sometime not so rich cuz of this extorting governemnt lining their pockets. i think thats why there are swiss bank accounts companies are shutting up shop and moving abroad. agree they should get taxed more though. seems the better you do the more you have to pay for it, which i guess is fair enough to a certain extent.

Jersey is $491bn tax haven

New US report will heighten alarm over UK's failure to stop the super-rich avoiding tax by funnelling assets to the Channel Islands

By the end of last year the international super-rich had stashed assets worth $491bn in Jersey in order to 'illegally avoid tax', according to a new report.

This staggering figure - nearly five times the annual global aid budget - comes from authoritative US-based financial think-tank Tax Analysis. It will heighten concern that the UK government is failing to crack down effectively on international tax evasion.

It has emerged that Swiss bankers are increasingly using Jersey to help their clients avoid the withholding tax levied on Swiss corporate dividends. It is thought that up to $78bn of so-called Swiss fiduciary deposits are funnelled from their banks to Jersey in this way.

Using International Monetary Fund, Bank of International Settlements (BIS) and the Jersey government's own data, the report reveals that bank deposits alone have risen in the past eight years from $171.4bn to $371.8bn. During the first six months of 2007 they jumped another 14 per cent to $423.5bn.
Report author Martin Sullivan, one of the world's top tax experts, said the $491bn figure is a conservative estimate and that the figure could exceed $500bn.

rich people should pay more in taxes, much more. People with extreme wealth will not miss the money that's being taken. They might miss it emotionally or whatever, but it will not hurt them to pay more. Where as someone who's barely scraping is hurt by every dollar that's taken. And Warren Buffett, one of the worlds wealthiest men, agrees with this line of thinking.

As if I give a damn!

After all, the rich are generally disdainful of those with less then themselves.
I am simply returning the favor...

I would love to see these life-of-luxury assholes have to get up and do for themselves. The day won't come soon enough...

Rich people should pay as much taxes as anyone else. How would you feel if someone from third world Africa came up to you and asked you to support their welfare with 40% of your money in "taxes"?

As for the "wealthy" people complaining about inflation and taxes... Well, then they're not really "wealthy". It's all a part of the game; if they don't understand that, they don't deserve those assets.
