I love my Floyd but had ashamedly never heard of this one before until it was mentioned on icmag Chat yesterday, EZB i think it was - cheers mate! So, I downloaded it. Three versions. Ok ... :)

What the hell am I talking about? Well, the idea is you get the original 1939 technicolor Judy Garland version of "The Wizard Of Oz". Then when the MGM lion roars for the third time start playing Pink Floyd's "The Dark Side Of The Moon", and you will notice all sorts of things in the soundtrack that appear to correlate to the movie. (There are at least 4 working, different torrents - just search the various torrent engines for "dark side" and youll find it, i know there is one at torrentspy for example)

All members of Pink Floyd have always denied that it was intentional and have always stated that all sync coincidences are just that - coincidental. But damn there are a lot of coincidences!
This page lists over 100 - http://members.cox.net/stegokitty/dsotr_pages/printable.htm
For a quick demo of what this is all about, there are 4 video snippets here - http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2007/03/20/video-mashup-dark-side-of-oz
Wikipedia not surprisingly also has a page about it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_side_of_the_rainbow

Some of the best known syncs include ...
- When Dorothy opens the door to the colourful world of Oz, the "cha-ching!" cash register sound fx start for the intro of the song 'Money' - a very funky effect!
- As Dorothy grabs her bag while she's at Professor Marvels, with the impending tornado, the song changes to 'The Great Gig In The Sky' ... the sound of a slide guitar, similar to a warning siren, is heard as you see the approaching tornado
- The lyrics "black ... and blue ..... and who knows which is which?" are timed to show the witch (black), then Dorothy (blue dress) ... then "which is which", an obvious reference to them both being witches
- Even at the end the Tinman has his dream come true - the sound effect of a beating heart is heard

And many many more ... coincidence or intentional? Some people just do not get it at all, while others swear the coincidences are too numerous and well timed. I certainly wouldn't put it past Pink Floyd to do something like this, but who knows ... you be the judge!

shine on crazy diamond also works with 2001 esp the part near the end when Bowman is seeing all the colours
as he flies through space

Fidel,
try echoes + 2001. its much better, imho
Ok you've struck my curiousity, I'm getting that now!

There is also "Alice On The Wall", which is the original Alice In Wonderland cartoon with Pink Floyd's "The Wall" as the soundtrack which I'm also getting - it's also said to be "sync'd", like with Echoes + 2001, and Dark Side + Wizard Of Oz.

Ive only tried 2001 + echoes, never "Shine on..."

its pretty convincing though, every different scene has a musical theme, heres how I think it goes:

part 1: the vocals at the beginning "overhead the albatross..." are all when Dave is in the escape pod near jupiter, then as soon as the vocals stop, he falls into the black hole

part 2: insturmental part while dave is in the time warp

part 3: really funky part when he gets spit out into another universe

part 4: screeching dying seagulls part when Dave is flying over the alien planet (suspiciously looks like earth in negatives)

part 5: sonar pings come back in on the piano and a final verse when Dave arrives at his alien home.

its really amazing if you take the time to watch it... but dont watch it on youtube, the resolution sucks and the audio sucks. youtube sucks.

btw you have to time it so "Jupiter and Beyond the Infinate" pops up when the first sonar ping goes off at the beginning of Echoes (the 23 minute echoes of meddle, NOT the echoes off "Echoes")

Many albums fit many films becuse timing is general. Our minds sync up the rest. I once randomly put on "MArch Slav" while watching a documentary on insects. Fit perfect...while I was high.
The Flyod/OZ coincident has been urban legend pretty much from when the album came our. If a movie has five hundred cuts and a piece of music has say three hundred many of them will sync up and the others we will consider artistic license.

It's still cool!

Dick,
Yes, but I think the argument is that there are SO MANY "sync's", and that they are seemingly so WELL TIMED with events in the movie, that it is fair enough for people to draw conclusions that something funky is going on here :)

I agree floyd + oz is an urban myth... but dont judge 2001 + echoes if you havent seen it

Theres lots of supporting evidence for it, Waters pretty much said they did it... both are the EXACT same length, if you watch it there will be no question in your mind.

it's not an urban myth at all, since it does actually work - not just concerning syncing 'cuts', but subject matter also.
plus i'm pretty sure roger waters hinted that it might have been less that coincidence in the last few years.

It does somewhat sync up, but it an't be on purpose unless they ALSO sync'd it up to the End of Evangelion because it goes so much BETTER with that.
Oh, how I love stoner vision...

i had actually been downloading darkside of the moon but when i watched the videos on your rolling stone link i changed my mind. the song BARELY matches up with the video in some of those examples, doesn't even make much sense in the others. if those are the best syncs in the video then it's all hype for sure.

i watched that on youtube and i don't see how anybody think it matches with the video, nothing seemed to sync at all. but, i've never seen 2001 before so it might make more sense to me if i actually knew what was going on in the movie

Actually those four video clips are very bad examples of the syncs - if you read the comments you'll see people flaming him lol
Please don't judge The Dark Side Of The Rainbow based only on those four video snippets

matching up echoes off of mettle with the third part of 2001: A Space Odyssey is so much better than the wizard of oz thing that its not even worth watching the wizard of oz thing IMO...u want the third 'ding' at the beginning of echoes to happen when the intro screen cuts to blackness...way better...

Stoner Legends is all. seen 'em back in 70's shown at a midnight theater when the 2001/mettle connection was first made. Lots of stoner hype. Fun but coincidental. The urban myth is that it was intentional not that it somewhat works.
Try National Geographic's "Carnivorous Plants" with Tomita's version of Holst's "The Planets". The sync ups are mind blowing.

A friend and I synced up The Wall to the End of Evangelion, an anime. It actually worked out pretty good, hilarious to watch when you're reeaaalllllyyy stoned.

Does anyone else refer to this as "stonervision"?
