Picking a fem from a m/f group for making fem seeds?

I'm trying to plan out a feminized seed run using a female to pollinate sourced from a mixed m/f population and needed some advice from my fellow IC'ers.

The plan is to spray about 10 plants with Colloidal Silver in order to pick the best plants to pollinate another group of AFs.

1. Do I need to wait until I sex the plants to start spraying with CS?

2. If I don't wait, is there a way to tell whether a plant was male before the spray or female before the spray?

3. Should i start the group that's getting sprayed before or at the same time as the to-be-seeded group?

Any tips? I know there must be stuff I'm missing here. Thanks

If you spray them all you should still be able to distinguish the males from the hermied girls. Just a waste to spray the guys too, why not wait until they show sex it's just a couple of weeks. Not aware of any way to know sex of AF's before they show it.

Starting the pollen donor plants before the seed-bearing mothers is a good idea. Then you can make sure you have enough pollen for the job. "Enough" is when you have enough that you think you would be able to cover all the buds you want pollinated by sprinking it on top... (I recommend collecting the pollen in a container and then pollinating buds by hand, maybe a couple of times, 4-6 weeks before harvest.)

Thanks noluv.
Any way you, or anyone, can recommend distinguishing the true males from the girl that were turned into males if I sprayed them all before sexing?

I've never sprayed CS, so there is probably an obvious answer to the above.

Also, I know I could use Giberellic Acid (sp?) and just spray later, but I'm more comfortable using CS for some reason.

Don't smoke or in any way consume the plants sprayed with CS.
The plants that have been pollinated, not sprayed, are fine to consume once you take out the seeds.

(I use coco, which is a bit quicker than soil, from my experience.)

I am running an auto-fem seed crop experiment right now, the link is in my signature.

Do you want a seed crop or are you going to selectively pollinate so you can have some buds and some seeds? This makes a difference in how you want to deal with your plants.

1. You do not have to, but I would. Autos show sex at about 3 weeks for the most part. Since I was spraying a fem, I started spraying after about two weeks. You could just spray the top or leave one branch not sprayed, that branch would show balls or hairs at the nodes. The plant I sprayed will have some small buds near the bottom. Those will self pollinate. I used store bought CS, Tiresias Mist and so far, so good.

2. Balls versus white hairs at the nodes. Even if you start spraying it before it shows, the plant still should put off some white hairs at the nodes if it was female to start with. If it was male, then it will not have any white hairs and some small balls at the nodes. I am not 100% sure on this. It may depend on the ppm of the CS you are using.

3. I did not even think of this until someone schooled me. Start the plants to be sprayed about 2 weeks before the plants that you want to be seeded. The spray will stunt the plants a little bit. The shemale will continue to spray pollen long after you need it to. Remember to get the shemale out of there about 3-4 weeks before you plan on picking so the seeds can get fat. If you are running a seed crop, let the buds go as long as possible and pick out the mature seeds that look like they are going to fall out.

I am new to making fem seeds. So far, everything is working great for me. I plan on getting some regular clones in July, running them inside for a bit and then spraying them for selective pollination with my outdoor plants.

Thanks for the tips Snoopster. Much appreciated.

I did read through your thread a couple times the last few days to pick up whatever tips I could. However, my main issue was selecting a female from a mixed population, and since you're using a feminized batch of seeds for your donor pollen plants, it negated the need to tell the difference between a true male and a sprayed fem.

This run is destined as a seed run, with plenty of hash to be made from seeded plants (not sprayed plants).

Sprayed plants won't be consumed.

Looks like I'll be best off starting the plants-to-be-sprayed before the plants that will be pollinated.

Didn't know that the sprayed plants would still show hairs if fem. That makes it much easier and straight forward. Maybe I'll leave part of the plants unsprayed, but probably will spray entire plants in order to try to get maximum pollen production.

I'll most likely be using a variety of AF plants as pollinators along with a variety of AF plants to be pollinated in order to increase genetic diversity and get some nice strong resultant genetics.

As far as storing the pollen for a few weeks, is there a recommended desiccant to use?

Also was wondering what the ideal time was to get the CS-sprayed-girl pollinators in with the plants-to-be-pollinated in order to maximize the seeding of the buds. I'd assume waiting until I get some nice dense clusters of hairs going a few weeks into flowering and keep them in for a couple weeks, then let plants over-mature by a couple weeks to ensure seed development.

I am pretty sure you can dry pollen out in a jar and put it in the fridge and it should be good for a few months. You might not need a desiccant if you live in a dry area. I bought some on amazon that claimed to be non toxic and change colors. I don't know if it matters, this is my first time using desiccant.

We have the shemale in the room with the girls that are to be seeded. With autos, the window is smaller. I would have the shemale in there as soon as the hairs start showing up.
Do you have to keep the shemale separate? Once it is showing a lot of pollen sacks it won't need much light.

Hi All,

To keep your pollen, mixture a little wheat flour, bag freezing seals in the freezer, and that can last for a long time.

I think that you should inquire about the thiosulfate of money(silver), which has a faster action, and less binding. Of more its components are easily to find: Thiosulfate of sodium and silver nitrate. Not need of electrolytic bath and of ppm. Just with a balance for components, some distilled water and the proportions to be respected, nice...

Otherwise, good luck for your project!

Goodbye
