Ph down, phosphoric Acid, our of doors

I have a gig happening in clay which is pH 8+, and the gig is now rather lime coloured. I thought that using peat and certain nutrients would adjust the pH, but it has not done so enough. I bought some 75% phosphoric acid today, and the fellow selling it said that one needs about 2 drops per gallon of water (!!!) to move the pH one point, that is, from 8.0 to 7.0, for example; and you pour on enough to soak the plants root mass and surrounding durt. The plants are 5 to 6 feet tall. Do those application numbers sound anywhere near reasonable?
Thanks for any wisdom.
