Those damn gnats breed in wet organic soil, the trick with getting rid of them to is to let the surface dry out so the larvae cannot hatch. You can put some sand or perlite on top of your soil an inch or two, so it drains and dries out quickly. That will help eliminate them.

Other chem? alternatives, Gnatol (I probably didn't spell that right), or mosquito dunks will kill them off.

For fungus gnats I used a combination of No Pest strips from Lowes or Home Depot ($5 each), put one of those in my room- 15'x15' room. Then, when I would water I would spray the water with 2 or 3 shots of neem solution right before the water seeps down into the soil, taking some neem down with it- then periodically spray the soil pretty well with the neem solution. After that I cut a potato into slices and put them on the surface of the soil. This attracts them and they lay their eggs on it instead of in your soil. After 4 or 5 days remove potato slices and toss away. Combined with some yellow sticky pads to catch the survivors and this made a drastic difference for me in about a week. And like dank said ^^^^^^^ an inch or two of sand on the surface helps to suffocate the ones in the soil if all else fails. Worked for me..........
Good luck with them baystaads

For fungus gnats, i use "Mosquito Dunk's"....they're a larvicide ...the gnats eat the shit and then it freezes their stomaches ...what ever the shit is, its undigestable for them so they die...guy at the hydro store recommended them and they worked great...Im sure you can just google them and you ll find em.

Get some "Safer Insect Killing Soap with Seaweed Extract II". Comes in a ready to spray bottle and is OMRI certified. Spray the top of your grow medium with it generously every two days. You'll notice a serious difference after one treatment but repeat every two days until you done at least 4 treatments. Then wait and see if you still see some and then repeat as necessary. More than likely they will be gone after a few treatments.

You don't have to spray the plants with it, just the top of your medium. Under $10 at hydro shops, Walmart, hardware stores, and garden centers.
Good to have some around too in case you get spider mites or any other insects that damage plants. Great stuff and highly recommended by many growers.

Keep using the strips too since they will kill the adults. But the larva have to be dealt with by the insect spray or expensive nematodes as mentioned already.
