Prevention?

Prevention?

minds_I,

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Most pests are carried in by the grower or tourists.
Quarantine new cuttings/clones or plants.
Preventatively treat newbies.
Do chores in the grow before handling newbies.
Brush and weeds harbor pests. Keep the yard trim and brush cut.
Wash and change clothes and shoes before opening/entering the grow.
This last is especially important if you have been outside cutting the lawn, gardening, hiking.
Some have shallow tubs of bleach water to treat shoes before entering walk in size grows.
Women's nylon stockings stretched over duct ends work nicely to screen smaller air intakes.

Life will always find a way. . . :sasmokin:

scotts makes a line of garden-safe pesticides that are made out of vegetable oil and natural plant hormones that will kill bugs.

the only bug problem i have in my grow is fruit flies, and although not detrimental to your garden's overall health, it's annoying getting little bugs in your drinking glass ;(

it works, it's safe. but it appears to be only temporary, as i usually have to spray it every day.

Sulpher Vaporizer

Sulpher vapors change the pH on the leaves of the plant. This makes the surface unsuitable for fungus or mold growth. It will also significantly slow the reproduction of pests, acting as an effective means of pest control. It is very effective on powdery mildew, thrips and spider mites. The heat plate is automatically regulated to 140 degrees, this allows the sulpher to vaporize. Safe! This unit never gets hot to the touch. Does not come with sulpher (available below).

SUNSPRAY ULTRA-FINE OIL
Insect Suffocant and Repellent

An ultra refined oil that is used as a suffocant and repellent on most varieties of tree crops, vegetables and ornamentals. Listed pests include; aphids, scale, mites, whiteflies, horn worms, leaf miners, lace bugs, etc. May be used both as a dormant spray as well as during active growth for controlling insect infestations. May be mixed with other insecticidal soaps. Use at 2-4 fl oz per gallon of water. 1-3 gallons per 100 gallons. Apply at 100 gallons per acre. Active ingredient 98.8% Paraffinic petroleum oil. The 2.5 gal size, For CA commercial growers a Pest. ID# is required.

SM-90

SM-90 is an organic based pest inhibitor, which discourages pest infection, fungus and root rot. SM-90 is prepared from natural plant oils. The organic composition of SM-90 results in it's ability to be bio degradable and is also non toxic to humans, animals and plants. It can be applied as a foliar spray or directly into reservoirs.

I must concur! Hot Shot no pest strips work. I really didn't think anything of them I just picked them up because I saw them at home depot. However, after months of battling thrips with Pyrethrum and neem, they are all gone after just a few weeks. What is this about them being toxic? What is considered prolonged use? I think I need to look into this…

where do you place the strips?

where do you place the strips?

Do you hang them? Put them in the pot? Does it matter?

And how does it work? Does it release a chemical killing the mites on the leaves or does it attract them and than trap them?

Thanks

Ladybugs cured my aphids, not an instant result but long term,2-4 weeks, aphids aren't there anymore. Now comes the gnats, dang large bags of potting soil seem to have them inside. I'm trying the neem oil for now, its all that is local. I'll know over the next week or two if the populations dwindle. I'm also loking at gnatrol, sounds like the answer to gnat problems.

baking soda 1/4 cup
apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup
epsom salts 1/4 tea
lemon juice 1 tbl
dish soap 2 drops

48 oz water

credits to 1tokeOverLine

mix accordingly and spray your plants wait 20 min and spray with water...

cover your soil or medium so it does not change your ph...

I would use on established plants... maybe dilute for clones and seedlings...

works great!

Hello Jonny,

I have read about that recipe before-mite exterminator. Anyway, I have read where others have used it with much success.

I am wondering about hte vinegar/BS reaction. As I recall me chemistry, it will produce co2, water and a salt.

Anyway-one needs not know how it works only that it does.

2buds,

Nematodes (sp) are what you need for gnats-they eat the larvea int eh soil.

I use NPS for gnats-keeps there numbers down. I also use a ewc/compost teas that have nematodes in them according to the add copy.

Thanks for playing.

If you want organic then this is the way to go nothing more organic than mother nature herself. We have been using these to much sucsses so far. You can see how fast they multiply to go get those unwanted mites. Praymantices or ladybugs work great too depending on what types of bugs you are trying to destroy. Organic means natural there is nothing more natural than these.

Thanks minds_I, I'll note for the next bug order.
On the 1toke magical mystery mix, I cannot stress enough to cover the soil, cover the soil. I mixed a batch and sprayed away, pest slowed down but I forgot to cover the soil, oh well new plants are started now. If possible use the mix outside, it leaves a heavy white residue all over the place, best left outside not in the clean room.

One thing with the ladybugs, I can't be sure but its the only geuss I got, I had a big bush that lived through the spray and was on its way to buds galore, then all of a sudden I got seeds everywhere, no males around but a few hermie flowers where spotted after they had opened. I'm geussing the ladybugs carried that pollen all over my plant cause I got seeds galore. Something to think about with critters but I haven't seen an aphid in weeks! Win some lose some, always something new to learn in the garden eh?
