perlite vs hydroton

perlite holds more water, but hydroton is heavier dry - my question is, if you filled one pot hydroton, one perlite and fully saturated both, which pot would be heavier at that point?

hydroton is not heavier when it is wet. the water runs right off of it rather quickly.

i think its a valid question. both are made to hold water and have a certain amount of water wicking ability.

IMO perilite has more cracks and crevices but doesnt stay as moist as hydroton and is lighter, while hydroton is heavier has less cracks and crevises, but stays moist longer because it has and absorption ability that is greater than perilite. . .. .so both have their strengths and weaknesses, but what makes which one actually better than the other? which ones cons or pros outweigh the other?

eventually all of this calls for and eventual side by side comparisson, so, something could be gained from all this.

as of late ive seen alot of growers, mainly soil, using hydroton kernels in at the top of their pots and actually getting roots to grow out of the top of the pots!

although perilite has been a mainstay, but mainly for aeration as opposed to water retention, could their be some value in using more perilite if it actually does retain more water then perilite? would it be sensible to use hydroton as part of a soil regimen?

could people leave their plants alone for longer amounts of time if either were a truth that were found out? . . . . ..damned important if you ask me.

an apple has its benefits just as a orange does, but could eating more of one than the other be beneficial overall? there is good sense to this question for all to benefit from.

I can leave my perlite plants day's longer then any hydroton plant.

I use perlite in hydro the key is filtering it.

Small perlite {#3} is best when used by it self if mix in with soil, coco or hydroton use chunky #5

My moms are in a 25% soil 75% perlite

what you do mean by filtering it and how would i apply the filter to an e&f table? i want to try perlite without clogging my tubing. why is small perlite better to use than big perlite if used by itself?

in buckets i line the net cut with coco mat

i have never ran a table but my guess would be line the pots with coco and put some sort of filter on the drain/fill part... i use sock's on the bottem drain of the colisum ...

the smaller perlite has more surface area & holds more water/nute's
