Peat Pellet?

Ive never used these and I was wondering if there is anything special I need too do? They seem like they hold an awful lot of water and Im kinda concerned that my seeds might just drown and rot. Do u need too squeeze the excess water out of em? Id hate too lose a batch of seeds.

Hi JSG, I use peat pellets for my seedlings too and can give you a few tips.

- First off, yes, gently squeeze the excess water out of them.

- After that, take a pair of scissors and cut a small hole in the center of bottom, or jab it with the point to create a series of small cuts. This makes it easier for the roots to get through the net around the pellets. Its not necessary but I do it anyway.

- Now take your pellet and gently widen the hole in the center with your fingers.

- Take your soil mix(the one you'll be using when you place your peat pellets into pots, a light mix for seedlings) and either chop it fine with a knife or run it through a seive to get it as fine as possible. Calculate two nice sized pinches for each pellet so you won't have to repeat this step. Do it all at once.

- Place a pinch or two in the hole in the center of your pellet

- Using a pencil make a small hole in the soil you just placed in the center for your seed, the seed shouldn't be any more than 1 cm (little less than a half inch) below the surface. Place your seed in the hole and cover with another pinch of your soil.

- Mist the top of the pellet until the soil is moist. Not too much, the soil further down will absorb moisture from the pellet.

- Make sure your pellets don't dry out...mist them when they need it until they're moist but not soggy, and keep in a warm spot until your seedlings break ground. I keep mine under a humidity dome on top of my VCR with power on.

That's it! Very easy and it works.

Thanks alot blue, Ive always just germed them in papertowels and put in the dirt, or used rockwool starter cubes(these are my favorite). But I thought i would give em a try. Thanks again, nice explanation.

Your very welcome JSG, I also germ them in paper towels first, just go ahead and prepare the pellets and then plant your seedlings as you would normally in soil
Your babies don't necessarily have to wait until the tap root shows to be put in their pots, you decide when you think they're grown enough. The good thing about the pellets is that if the seedlings stretch too much, you can bury them deeper when you put them in pots, and cover the excess stem with soil

Don't know if you folks have ever tried rapid rooters but they are a god send.

Have found my girls root much faster in these but hell Soma uses Peat Potts and look where it got him (Master Soma) that is.

mr. wags, I've been reading alot about these rapid rooters but haven't tried them, mainly 'cause they don't sell them over here

I use the Peat Pellets too. I've had mixed success with them. Thekey is making sure they don't get to wet. They will hold moisture. Make sure you squeeze enough excess out of them.

Hey Mr.Wags... I've been thinking about using rapid rooters for my next grow. I was gonna start at the end of the month when I put my current seedlings in flower. They've stretched so much and are starting to smell like kush so I figure I better stick them in flower sooner...

I always get like 90 to 100% germ success with rockwool cubes, or the paper towel then straight in the dirt method, I think I might just stick with what Im use too, I just dont like the looks of these peat pellets.
