PC Fan & Adapter

I have this Fan and adapter but I have to set it to 9v to get fan to move then it spins up extremely fast and stops abruptly, but keeps spinning with the momentum before it spins up really fast again and again. Is there any way I can make this fan spin constantly, it has four wires red,black,white,blue. I thought maybe I could use it to connect to a homemade scrubber for a small stealth grow, plus I'd like to know if homemade scrubbers actually work and don't just look good in the pics? Any help much appreciated.

I did it only spins up at 9v or 12v but it doesnt have a constant spin it pluses up to a full spin then stops abruptly, then spins up again, is there a way to make it spin constant?

the sticker on the fan says 12v 2.5amp, your adapter shows 9v at 650mah. it's been a while since i've done electronics so i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure your adapter just isn't providing steady power because your fan wants 4x what it can provide. if it still pulses at 12v then i'd try a new adapter.

So it's nothing to do witht the fan having 4 wires, what type of adapter do you suggest I use to get a constant spin outa this fan?

My problem with my computer fan shutting off and on and spinning at different rates was due to a short in the splices. I think you should check your splices.

I suggest a test. Hook it up to a 12 volt car battery, it should work perfectly if it's connected correctly. That will tell you if it's the power supply or the fan that's causing the odd fan speeds. Only two of those four wires are really doing anything... You do need a supply that's rated at least 2.5 amps and 12 volts. 2.5 amps is a lot, it must be a hellava big computer fan.

Get a 3 amp laptop power supply from ebay for cheap cheap.

Tried your suggestion Adze and the Fan spun without stopping/pulsing, but it seemed to be going too fast it was in overdrive would connecting it to a 3 amp laptop power supply, cause it to burn out or worse go on fire?

No. The supply can be 100 amps and it would not matter. when he suggested hooking it up to a car battery, that was exactly what he was doing. A car battery can supply hundreds of amps.

Get a 3 amp supply (replacement laptop power supplies are cheap) and it will work fine. The supply must supply as much as the fan wants (at least 2.5A).

As carrotsyo said, with a 12 volt source the fan can only draw as much current as it was designed to... It should not be going too fast. Any 12 volt supply with at least 2.5 amps, and having a little extra is good, should work fine. If you have a good strong car battery you could test the fan, leave it connected overnight, should be running fine the next morning. I really don't think you're going to have a problem, likely it will work just fine. Best luck with the grow!
