What bulbs to use?

What bulbs to use?

I know I asked this before, in a semi confusing way. I have everything I need to assemble this this week. Just need to know what size in watts cfl's I need? how many? and what kind? (softwhite, warmwhite, brightwhite)

oh...I'm gonna be using a 100cfm fan for exhaust. Figure that would have thing or two on what size and quantity of bulbs I use.

Thanks,

Jaxx

Jaxom,

CFL's for an entire grow? Or just for one state like vegetating?

Will you be flowering with CFL or HPS?

Best bet: veg. with "brightwhite" (probably daylight) and flower with 70watt HPS (www.e-conolight.com).

Just CFL's: "brightwhite" for veg., "warmwhite" to flower. Or, a mixture of warm's and bright's 3:1 respectively.

As for wattage, with fluoro they say 50watts per sq. foot minimum. Obviously the more the merrier, and a 100CFM exhaust will definately do well in extracting. 70watt HPS would work great and I strongly recommend you use HPS to flower.

What bulbs wattages have you got access to?

highonthechroni,

Sorry, I kind of awkwardly asked this same question last week with more details. I'm building a 150hps box, but this will take some more time. I was rather impressed with Lemon's case grow, and since I have all the materials to get this up and running now, I decided I'd give this a shot. Then once the 150 is going, I can use this for bonsi moms or a breeding "room".

I'll be using cfl's for both veg and flower. I've grown commerically before (before a stork brought me my beautiful daughter). This is now a down sized operation, just enough for my better half and I and some elderly parents going through chemo treatments. I'm fully aware of the yields that hps can provide. Hence the reason I'm going with the 150 box.

For cfl's. Basically whatever Lowes, Home Depot, Menard's or local nursery's/hydro shops carry. I really don't like ordering via the net. Not because I'm afraid of leo's but, I've had some bad experiences with UPS.

After posting last night I did some more research on cfls. I orginally innovated using two 400w hps with another 240w vertically mounted vho flo's in my commercial op. This greatly improved my total yields. But this micro growing is a whole new animal, might as well ask the experts, right?

One thing I'm not sure about, is how folks are reading (describing) the watts they're using. Are they going by the watt's the cfl's use? Or their incandesant equivlant?

Mixing or swapping, which gets better yields. As I understand it bright white cfl's have more blue...where as the warm bulbs have more reds. Is it better to say use two of each for the entire grow, or swap out at the transfer into 12/12 to go from bright to warm and use 4 bulbs for each?

Note, I wanna go with an internal scrubber, and I don't think I'd have the room if I use more then 4 bulbs.

The other alternative is to go with one of those large envirolites that I've seen on the web. Anyone use these? At $50 or more per bulb, my budget would only permit at this time one bulb. Which would you choose? Before I went with one of these, I would need some measurements. These envirolites use moogle sockets not mediums like regular cfl's. With socket and bulb, will that fit inside a case?

Thanks All!

well first jaxom cfl is rated by actual watts, not equivalent values. and as far as which lights....6500k is a good spectrum for veg and 2700k is goo for flowering. those numbers can be found on the packages of most bulbs. As far as the setup you can really go either way. HOTC did the one massive bulb while i personally do 2 smaller ones, granted mine is just a veg PC. whatever you can rig up that is aesthetically pleasing to you is great. mixing ans swapping will both give great results but the difference between them is minimal. but i always try to have some opposite spectrum in there whether its a little blue spec. for flower or a little red for veg.

Hey HighonChroni,
Have you used any of the Luma HPS or Metal halide bulbs from that econolite site. I ordered two 100 watt medium base bulbs from them. I ordered some metal halides a few months back and they blew out right away. Does anyone in here know if I need to install some kind of dimmer or ballast for these things. last thing I want is to pay 15 bucks for these things and have them blow out the second i plug them in...

Also the new case is finally coming together. I finished building my scrubber last night and getting rid of the light leaks. I'm just waiting for this super reflective mylar to arrive so i can line the sides and then it's pretty much done. I'll try to post some pictures of it soon.

Peace

upgraded my box from 46w of mixed spectrum cfl to a 70w hps with an external ballast and 2 80mm fans with temps maxing out on a hot day at 85....its still meant to be just a veg box but atm it is at a different location with 3 slurple f1's in it...2 in soil and 1 hydro.

this was a very recent upgrade...just did it today so the plants have been above ground/rockwool since since 7/18 and have been growing under those aforementioned cfls....im really looking forward to seeing how much better the hps performs in there for veg in comparison to the cfl.

here are some pics:

The Ballast you used for the HPS, where did you get it or what did you rip it out of? Also how big is the actual ballast would I be able to mount it on my light hood or would temps get too crazy?

it is from a security light from home depot, the ballast is still in the factory housing and sits outside the case. the ballast would add unnecessary weight to the lighthood, and unless it is really practical for you to do it that way i would recommend against it. and with the ballast being internal temps will always require more attention and usually more fans.

High all,

Well my PC case should be up and running soon. Going to be keeping a fem White Rhino and fem Church (Greenhouse Seeds Co.). Cloning is the business :D

Jaxom: good luck with everything!

Mr Ballyhoo: nope I haven't. Not sure whether you need a dimmer. I'd imagine that you wouldn't. Have you tried emailing E-conolight? Nice case by the way :joint:

rkrone: hey buddy, looking good as usual!

Mr.Bongowsky: nice little plants! Can we get some shots from further away?

Beautiful buds everyone! :D
And that is a very nice and clean looking setup RussianGrower! Looks like you got a good yeild out of it too, so keep up the good work comrade :smoke:

Just a question for you PC case growers.. How are you guys growing your seedlings without all the stretch? I've got 105 w cfl. Only like 1 1/2 sq. feet in the case. Plants keep stretching.

Keep them all close to the light! Use training methods like LST & ScroG!

About 2cm :rasta:
