PC Case Grow w/ Cree CXA3070 !!

Hey ICMAG,

I just finished up my first harvest and wanted to thank you guys. Much thanks for the inspiration

Some details of my little setup:
I used Bueno Time's Cree CXA build to build my LEDs. I used an old PC case I had laying around and gutted it and installed 2 x 120v AC fans (105cfm) that were used in server racks. One fan for exhaust and one for intake. This may seem a bit overkill, but with both LEDs running, the temp would increase pretty fast in there. After some initial testing I decided to use a 12v computer fan as well that remained running non-stop for exhaust. Temps still remained pretty high through-out the grow, between the lower and upper 80's (F). That's what I get for cramming 100w of lighting into a 1.5 sq ft space!

Soil was Fox Farm Happy Frog (1/3 perlite and 2/3 soil) and nutes were the Fox Farm Trio (Grow Big, Tiger Bloom, and Big Bloom). I pretty much followed the advised feeding schedule, except I used 1/2 of the recommended doses, adding a little Cal-Mag here and there. I would say definitely go on the light when using the nutes, I'm definitely going to use less next time since I had some nute burn from them. I tried keeping the pH between 6.0 and 6.5, but using the liquid drop testing kit, it could have been off from what I hear.

I started using some stellar bagseed that I found. I germinated using the paper towel method and transplanted into a yogurt sized container after the tap root appeared. I used a 24/0 light cycle for 1.5 weeks, then switched to 12/12, as I did not want the plant to outgrow the space. Check out this time-lapse video to see the entire veg stage up to the beginning of flowering. I stopped using the timelapse camera (iphone) during flower because I was worried about the light causing the plant to herm.

The flowering stage I documented with photos, which can be found in this album. The buds really fattened up later in the cycle. The smell was minimal, but definitely noticeable since I did not use a carbon filter. The setup is not totally stealth, but small enough to be hidden away in a closet.

I just harvested and I am waiting on drying and curing a bit before I get a final yield, but i'd estimate between 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce, maybe an ounce!

Let me know if you guys have any questions about the setup or general critique. I would love some feedback!

Thanks Chloe! They came out pretty chunky! I'd like to give her some more space and stretch out some next time. Also, I think the small area contributed to heat issues, which may have made the buds foxtail a little bit. I like your small cab, I may try something like that soon!

You've made me want to get some 3070's now. I have two meanwell 35-700's laying around begging to be hooked up to some COB's. One at 700ma wouldn't be enough but I think two chips would do. Only thing holding me back is the cost. Digikey has some AB bins for 42.00. I've been looking at them a lot lately. Maybe in a few weeks....your results are certainly inspiring. No way you would have got buds like that with CFL or even a 150w hps for that matter.

Thanks for the kind words about my cab!

Can you dim with your drivers? The cxa 3070 is one if the most versatile micro lights when running a dimmable driver. Easily beats the heat when driven softly.

This setup is not on a dimmable driver, but the next set of Vero's that I plan on building will be for sure! It would be much easier to control heat in a small space using a dimmable driver, I see that now. Although I could have probably gotten away with just running one CXA the whole time, and I did for a portion of the veg stage, but decided to crank them both up to see what the case could do.

I ended up getting just over 28g dried weight, so it was pretty awesome to get an ounce out of such a small space! :dance013:

Hey dion! Thanks for all your very informative posts. I really appreciate all your guides :) I'm getting ready to build a Vero 29 light (2 x Vero v2 4000K, HeatsinkUSA 12" heatsink, and compatible dimmable driver) to replace the CXAs, because I'm moving them to a bigger cabinet I'm constructing. What kind of pics would you like to see? Of the lights? Or Cab? Thanks man!

Go for it! Get some CXAs or CXBs and hook those things up! They will impress you for sure! I've not tried growing with CFL's so I can't compare my results. In fact this was my first successful grow, so I still have a lot of learning to do :)
