Party cup smart pot

I want to get the roots growing sideways out and not going in a circle like what happens normally.

I thought to poke some holes in the sides of the cups to encourage growth out radially. Does this make sense and what size holes should I be poking, one a square inch?

Are you referring to a solo type cup right?

We put a few small holes on the bottom of the cup for drainage. Adding holes to the side of the cup may or may not be productive. I'd rather keep light away from the root systems whenever possible.

You'd need to poke too many holes to make this worthwhile imo.

Instead I'd just get some felt or newspaper and use the cup as the form to make your own small "smart" pots.
