Parents 'ignorant about cannabis'

Cannabis can be three times as strong as it was 30 years ago
Police chiefs are accusing parents of showing ignorance and complacency in the face of widespread cannabis use among teenage children.
The Association of Chief Police Officers says many parents do not understand the serious health risks of newer, more potent strains of the drug.
It is calling on parents to show zero tolerance to help stamp out use of the class C drug.

Government figures for 2006 suggest one in 10 under-16s has smoked cannabis.
The call follows the sentencing of mother Nicola Cooper earlier this week for giving cannabis to her children to stop them buying it from street dealers.

Some kids are taking the equivalent in cannabis terms of what would be a bottle of vodka a day

Professor Robin Murray, Institute of Psychiatry
Assistant Chief Constable Simon Burne of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) said it was irresponsible parenting to introduce drugs to children.
"It's about zero tolerance," he told BBC Breakfast News.
"It's not cool to smoke drugs. You are not being a good parent by introducing drugs in any sort of way to children's experience to help them grow up.

"It's harmful, there's no place for it so stamp it out."
Glen Smyth, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said parents who may have smoked cannabis recreationally in their university days are misguided about the health dangers.

FACTS ABOUT CANNABIS
Cannabis was reclassified from a class b to a class C drug in 2004
It is often imported but is increasingly cultivated in UK homes and greenhouses
Short-term effects are increased pulse rate, decreased blood pressure, bloodshot eyes, heightened appetite and dizziness
In the longer term, smoking it can lead to lung damage, paranoia and mental health problems
Department of Health figures suggest the number of under-16s trying the drug has fallen in recent years

It is thought cannabis can now be three times as strong as it was 20 or 30 years ago.
"We need to get rid of the idea that cannabis is really OK," said Mr Smyth.
"What is largely unseen are our psychiatric hospitals full of people whose illnesses have been triggered by cannabis."
He said it was important to get the message across to children at junior school age of the downsides of the drug.
The police have the support of some health professionals who fear the potency of different types of cannabis, including skunk, is misunderstood.

Stay calm

Professor Robin Murray, of the Institute of Psychiatry, said parents needed to think of cannabis in the same way as they would about alcohol.
Some liberal parents have been quite pleased when their 15-year-olds tells them they are taking cannabis. They say 'oh, thank goodness' they are not drinking.
I still can't believe we have lost our son all from this so-called soft recreational drug

Debra Bell

"Some kids are taking the equivalent in cannabis terms of what would be a bottle of vodka a day."
Charity Drugscope agrees that some parents are complacent, but insists there are many who are very concerned about their children using drugs.
Martin Barnes, Drugscope's chief executive, advised worried parents to stay calm, seek reliable information and to talk to their children.
"The important point for parents is not to overreact," he said.
"Just because a child is using the drug, they might be experimenting as many young people do, doesn't meant they are going to become a long-term user or a problem user."

Aggressive behaviour

But Debra Bell, whose son started smoking cannabis at 14, told BBC Breakfast News that had not been her experience.
Her son's behaviour became increasingly aggressive and unpredictable and eventually led to him making himself homeless.
She said the received wisdom was to apply tough love but it had been a difficult decision to make.

"I still can't believe we have lost our son all from this so-called soft recreational drug," she said.

Again, another disappointing article from the BBC, showing thier clear lack of knowledge and their persistance with scaremongery and sneaky tactics to portray a one sided arguement. :badday:

In the longer term, smoking it can lead to lung damage, paranoia and mental health problems

Govt studies conducted on long term ganja smokers in Jamaica found less incidence of lung cancer than among non-smokers..guess what? the cancer rates were much higher among cigarette smokers..so much for the cannabis - lung cancer link...the problem specific to the UK and Europe is most smokers mix cigarettes with hash or grass ( the silly wankers!) ...which is stupid as the cigarettes are full of poisons and chemicals and are meant to be smoked filtered.. that's where the problem is.

Paranoia is partially caused by the fact that it's illegal ,the plant was harvested too early, too much was consumed/inhaled at the one time and or the smoker should of eaten some food prior to smoking or just after to prevent the short-term effects of low blood sugar.

mental health problems is another lie the controllers push...in 101% of the cases the subject was mental, disturbed or suicidal anyway irrespective of their cannabis use or not....

the bad part is that there are going to be some parents that are gonna fall for this sh*t!!! they know they cant keep spreadin lies to the kids, so now they are gona go after the parents of the kids as . . parents, teasing their parent skills. these people are a joke!!! their efforst are laughable at best!!

I still can't believe we have lost our son all from this so-called soft recreational drug

some kids are just insane,,,most parents who lose a son to suicide tend to grasp for answers rather than blame bad parenting or genes...

the whole article was typical sensational journalistic headline grabbing nonsense..

no facts were presented, just anti-ganja crappola.....

Everyone knows the best growers can be found in psychiatric hospitals.Everyone must remember the classic novel "One flew over the growhouse".It was later renamed one flew over the cannabis nest.

but they didn't lose him to suicide. the article said the drug "made" him homeless, after the parents kicked him out. :bashhead: :spank:

The American said:
1 bottle of vodka= how much erb again??

their special chart says 5 shots of vodka is 5 bowls of ganja. so couple blunts a day is about a whole bottle. kind of like those 3 million dollar grows you read about in the paper, with 1 room, and 2 lights. :muahaha:

It seems to get stronger and weaker as the days go on. They need to make their mind up, maybe then they will realise they need to stop lying to people.

The UK is a little retarded when it comes to discussing cannabis. They use a big book of magic figures and facts that the government seems to share with a small, select group of "experts" but which can't be revealed to the public in case terrorists use them (the same book with the proof of WMDs in Iraq).

The sad part is, my parents have now become convinced that cannabis is the reason there is crime, gangs on the street and crazy kids. These are not stupid people. The propaganda has worked.

Poor, self-deluding Britain with their non fact checked tabloid BBC stories. For shame.

I don't get it. As a teenager, it seemed like all of my peers were pretty cool about smoking ganj. Either they smoked it or they lived and let live.

So this brings me to my question. At what age do you suppose people wake up and forget everything they knew about cannabis and are forced to refill their knowledge banks with DEA propaganda?

Does it happen at a certain age? Or is it once the wife pops one out, her brains (and the husbands) are left in the delivery room? What happens, exactly? I'm 31, and I can't imagine ever waking up and believing some of the ridiculous shit I hear about marijuana, heroin, cocaine and other drugs. (And yes, a lot of what is said about heroin and cocaine is as overblown as it is with marijuana - functional addicts DO exist, but the only ones you ever see are the end-of-the-line worst case scenarios)

So... again... at what age does the great IQ drop begin?

BBC has bad journalism when it comes to pot. Me thinks they have an agenda.

In the UK theres not a news agency without an agenda when it comes to pot these days. They're all spewing the same flawed arguments based on these studies.

This only started to happen when it was downgraded to a class c drug.

totally agree, I used to think the BBC wasn't too bad, but this article is just the latest in a long line of bad articles on cannabis. Seriously, stop the scare tactics and actually explain your arguements - oh wait, I forgot, "cannabis is a safe drug" is not a headline that sells newspapers.

The other problem is the journalism put out by those on the other side of the fence (pro-pot, not America)..

The journalism coming out of BBC at least comes across like intelligent journalism. Not so much for the facts, but more for the style of writing, vocabulary used, etc.

Pro-pot journalism usually tends to come off like op-ed pieces or high school journalism, with lots of '!!!!'s and stuff like that.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? :)

well the old bbc chief was fired, and a labour lapdog put into place, so that was the end of a decent bbc.

As for the "tough love" mother, does she really think that smoking a few joints was more harmfull to her kid than throwing him out onto the streets to live homeless? What kind of homelife did she give her son if that is her way of dealing with things? Is it really any wonder that he was becoming angry and unpredictable towards her? Let alone feeling the need to chill out a bit lliving under the same roof as that attitude.
