painting the floor

in your experience what has been the best material to paint a basement floor. I've tried lining it with panda plastic bonded with 3m adhesive spray, this works pretty good for a little while but soon the plastic tears and it looks like shit. i thought about painting with that "dry lock" stuff but i hear it gets powdery, and it's pretty expensive. i dont mind expensive if it does the trick. thanks fellas

Garage and Driveway paint works very well. Just mortar the large holes or cracks and then wipe real well and you'll be able paint right over the crete.

Get some of the mold resistant additive and stir that into what ever good grade paint you buy, they will know what you mean

Well, first things first....what is the condition of the floor? Previously painted or not? Is the slab moist, or do you get water coming in at all? How old is the slab? If it's less than 30 days old the ph won't be right yet for it to accept paint or stains.

Now, that said. I would recommend H&C Shield Plus Ultra, which can be picked up at any Sherwin Williams store. It's a xylene based concrete stain that won't chip, peel, or flake because it absorbs into the concrete. The next best thing would be a two part epoxy flooring product. Go to a paint store, not HD or Lowes or Wal-Mart. The products they sell are usually quite inferior compared to what the paint stores sell. Their products are aimed at homeowners that don't know the difference.

If you do decide to use an epoxy product, be sure to watch the pot life. Some epoxies only last about 10 mins in the pot once they are mixed. Either the epoxy or the stain will ruin whatever brushes/rollers you use with it, so buy cheap throw aways.

If you need more help, just ask. I'm a professional painting contractor, and this type of stuff is what I do for a living.

One other product I will mention that would do pretty good is ArmorSeal 1K waterborne urethane. If the floor is un-coated, you can put two coats of this on and be done with it. It's an industrial flooring product for plants, hospitals, factories, etc. It's designed to hold up to a lot of abuse, and it works great for residential floors. This is also sold at Sherwin Williams.

I've wondered if painting the floor black wouldnt be a good idea,I dont really want too much light on the undersides of my leaves but it seems like a black surface would draw more light downward, but then again you only have so many lumens to work with..

There's no reason I can think of to block the light from the bottom of the leaves. Heck, I'm probably gonna add a couple flouros under my plants this time to fatten up the lower buds....you almost can't have enough light up to a point.

thanks alot for the detailed reply stoned2death. today, before reading your reply, i went to sherwin williams and just asked them what i should do. they just told me to get their High Performance Floor Enamel, http://www3.sherwin.com/do_it_yourself/sherwin_williams_products/interior_house_paint/paints.jsp

last one on that page. It's already bought so i guess i'll just go with that, the advantage of this product is that prep is pretty simple, no need for acid washing and it's self priming. I had the guy add mildewcide like suggested above.

skeletor, why would you want to keep light away from the underside of your leaves????? figure the more light the better, as far as painting it black and drawing the light down.. dont think it works that way. Way i figure it light bounces around untill it gets absorbed by something, the black paint would suck all the light up instead of it bouncing around eventually absorbing into your plant , i just made that up by the way and it makes sense so.. thanks again

Ahh, very well. I'm farmiliar with the product. Used it to paint a parts room floor for Penske. It should do you just fine. Make sure the floor is clean and all will be well.

The stomata are located on the undersides of the leaves and are very sensitive, everything I've read indicates too much light on the undersides can cause problems. This is what I've read I wasnt an erb plant in my last life so I cant say for sure but it makes sense to me lol.I know if you wear a black T-shirt in the sun it seems to attract the light a lot more than a white T-shirt would, actually this whole thing doesnt make a lot of sense I think I'll shudup now

Well, I know you're correct on the color deal. Black absorbs light, white reflects it. As for the bottom of the leaves not liking light...I have no earthly idea, lol!

Looking good fuzy! That room's gonna be bright as hell when it's all lit up :D

What did that can of floor enamel run ya and can you go over it with tile or other flooring at a later date if needed?

the can was about 40 bucks, it's suposed to cover 600 sqft but i dunno, they always over estimate, i painted 24x8 which is a little under 200 sqft x 2 coats = 400 sqft, pretty much the whole gallon was used up. i have no idea about tile or other flooring, i can't see why not. lol, i woulden't want to have the job of scrapping this shit off to put in tile.

I might have to pick up a can of it then...I've got a ~150 sq/ft room that's bare concrete right now. At least it would be easier to keep it clean if I could see all the crap on the floor :D

I'm sure there's probably a stripper available to remove it if need be...hell, maybe I'll hire a couple of them to apply it :chin:

its easier to find painters that strip, than it is to find strippers that paint:wink:
