lots of growers check the weight of there pots to figure out when to water, this is a hit and miss till you have the exp.

I like to wait till I see the fans start to droop a bit, and then flood um. i use a very fluffy soil mix50% perlite, and 10% vermiculite, i like to see a lot of run off out the bottom of the can when waterin, and you can do whatever tests you want on the run off to see how your soil is doin.

just my 2 cents:D

I cant see how plantin into dry soil would hurt at all, and the excess water will leech into the dry soil.

A technique to help during an overwatering problem is to simply increase the airflow on the plant as much as possible without making the leafs snap violently in the wind. This increases evapotranspiration (sweating). You want to get the water out asap because the longer a plant remains overwatered, the more likely the plant won't recover enough to get to harvest.
