Over watering? + medium mixture question

Hi guys!

No long ago I started out with my first SOG attempt. Im using 6"x6" pots. I chose to prepare my own medium, for which I used basic flower soil (ph 5.5 - 6.5), mixed with perlite (1 part for every 3 parts of soil), dolomite (1 table spoon per 1 liter of soil), and keramsite, with which I filled the botton of the pots (a small layer), and a small layer also went on top. I used the keramsite on the bottom and top to prevent fast evaporation, as the pots used for SOG are rather small. At first I thought of watering every two days. Its been over 8 days now since the seedlings came out, and they seem to be doing ok (though today I noticed they are getting more "light green" than they were a few days ago), but the mail problem is with clones that I received - they are about 5 weeks now, and had a pretty rough time (uneven light period, clones taken from them etc). They are also in the 6"x6" pots. After about 3 days I noticed that the leaves are getting yellow from the tips, and are drying out. Unfortunatley I didnt have my camera with me, so I took the leaves, and made the photos below:

Looks like over watered, doesn't it? Or could this be somthing else (but I'm wondering, why are the seedlings ok - for now). After watering the plants, I left them for 2 days, came back - watered them again (I guess that wasnt a good idea, but I was paranoid that because of the small pots they will dry out fast), came back after 3 days, put my finger in and the soil was still very moist!! So, my question is - are two layers (bottom and top) of keramsite too much and they totally prevent any evaporation at all, or should I (keeping in mind that even after 3 days the soil looked like just watered) spread the watering time out to lets say once a week or longer?

What I'm most worried about is root rot - if the water didnt evaporate at all in 3 days, there is a chance it won't in 7 as well, keeping the soil wet and causing root rot. Has any one tried using keramsite on the bottoms and tops of the pots? Is this a good idea - maybe I'm just panicing and after lets say 6 days the soil will dry out (is it even possible that two layers of keramsite would totally or very efficently prevent evaporation?)? Or should I remove some of the top layer of the keramsite to make sure that soil dries our quicker?

Sorry for the long story, but I had to describe it all, just to make sure you'll know exactly how my problem looks. The light is 1 400W MH (hanging pretty high above the 5 week old clones, to also reach some of the seedlings, and 2 double 36W T8 CFL's for the rest of the seedlings, which if my problem doesn't get solved will soon catch up with the clones..).

Every opinion / suggestion and tought is more then welcome - thanks for any help!

Take care,
ericsson

Hi again,

know one took interest in my problem, but Im still fighting with it. This time I made some pictures of the Plants. They are 3 weeks now, I spreaded the watering period to about every 7days now (yet Im still not sure if thats enough, or perhaps too long). I watered the plants on saturday (they got there first feeding of GHE 3 part - half of the dosage suggested for hydro), the pics were taken yesterday:

NYCD:

BlueKill:

The clones (no idea what strain, kinda coming back to life but still not fully well):

Swiss Mix (freebie)

Maroc:

Any ideas what's wrong?
Temp. is around 25-28*C, humidity 20-40% (I know, not enough - I've ordered another humidifier and waiting for it to arrive). They are in a 18/6 light period.

Thanks for reading,
Eric

well bro it looks like whatever ur feeding them is too strong for thier lil selves and is burning them...theres no way they should look like that so young in life...also from everything i know the lime is really strong bro a little goes a long way...like i only put 3 tbsp.in 5 gallons of soil...1 per litre might be wayyyyyy strong for them bruh.
take that top layer off of there i dont think its doin any good for you...i aint sayin its doin bad but it definetly aint helpin.it could even choke them lil ones if it pinches the stem.they look real thin still in the stem...dont ever water ur plants before they need it yo.do the lift to check them if the pot aint lite then leave them be,you can love them right to death yo.too much water and they will lock out and stop growin...its like it suffocates the root.
i never heard of that kermamsite or whatever is for sure but i think you would be better off useng chunky perlite mixed in ur soil mix...that stuff ur using just dont sit right with me bro.
and get a small fan on them if you dont have one in there it will make them stronger from the breezy going across them and it will help ur soil dry out faster.
not tryin to rip ur grow apart bro just tryin to help.peace-T-

Thanks for the reply Tonatiuh. Its the first time they got fed with the GHE 3 part series, last week I also gave then an organic fertilizer called Biohumus (its worm castings - practically impossible to overdose). I'm not convinced that the plants are burnt, still thinking of overwatering, but once a week in such small pots it sounds weard (then again, they are still small and dont drink too much). GHE suggests 6ml of each part (Gro,Bloom,Mico) per 10 liters of water for hydro and half the solution for soil, so I gave them about 3ml/10L. Do they definitely look overfertilized? I know keramsite is rearly used in english, but looking at different threads here I'd guess its just hydroton? I put the top layer there so the pots wouldnt dry out too fast (looks like its working.. perhaps too well). I've also noticed some green shit growing on the very top of the soil (alge?) - why did it develop and how to get rid of it?

Thanks again,
Eric
