The gardens are looking great. I'm doing the same fencing as that next year. I've lost several to curious/hungry animals digging. What are you using for ferts this year?

Man thats too bad 2 plants were eaten by deer. Did they kill the whole plant or just sample? Great shots there.

bongasauras im not that far from you and i was wondering you said your gonna leave some plants in the ground right up to the first killing frost....
i wanted to do the same but the weather has been pretty inconsistant....today is like 75 in the sun!
i just dont want my plants to die in the frost but i need them to stay in the ground as long as possible....whats your technique?

I am not Bongasauras but i do garden in the same part of the world and personally i don't worry much till we get well below zero, if i go out in the morning and find the temps down around -4 i tend to cut anything that is close to ripe as in my experiance to much tissue damage is done at those temps and there is little advantage to leaving it out longer. So far i have had 2 light frosts 0 deg to just below and have noticed next to no damage, just two plants are showing any signs and it is just minor damage to the fan leaves. Both of the damaged plants are in low spots and don,t forget that a shift in elevation of only a few feet can drop the temp by a couple degrees so while low areas can provide good stealth they do chill prety fast in the fall. All that being said the only change i make at this time of year is to watch for frost damaged leaves so i can remove them before they start to rot and help the spread of the evil botrytis mold.

Once again some great shots, Bong. They're filling in nicely. The little one that got partially eaten is still going to yield more than some of mine that haven't been eaten by anything. They were planted late as replacements for dug up plants, and got low light.

Not really sure what dug them up, but i'm guessing it was a raccoon. Definately using chicken wire fencing next year.
