I have some fliers in my soil, growing in smart pots outdoors. If i sprinkled DE on top of dry soil watered it in will it kill living microbes that are already in my soil? Thanks.
It's likely to only have an effect on crawling insects, it does need to be kept dry though, once it's wet, useless. It does also seem to have a silica like effect, I'm sure it helps resistance too.
You might also find this effective, it can be wet without issues - http://www.1-hydroponics.co.uk/bugs-pests-disease-control/bugs-and-pests/gnatnix.html
Good luck.
I used to use DE as a top dressing against fungas gnats but it really doesn't work that well ive discovered. DE it's much better mixed into your soil at the start. The best thing imo to use is perlite or pumice its a real pain in the ass believe me especially if you have lots of plants but it works extremely well because the bugs cant get in or out. Fungas gnats are basically super gnats at this point the organic sprays including even BTI barely work anymore. But if you cover the top of the media with a real generous layer 1 inch thick of perlite, pumice, or stones it will stop them in their tracks
And do it for at least 16 days because im pretty sure their breeding cycle is around 12 days
100% success rate with this product. ONE TIME APPLICATION!
Shit works da BOMB!!! these are not root boring nematodes and they'll fix ur gnat issue in honestly 2 days.
I have used Dr. Pye's Scanmask 10 Million Live Beneficial Nematodes - Kills Over 230 Bugs
multiple times, coco comes with gnats, no way around it... so when and if it comes down to it, nematodes are the best solution.
The DE won't kill microbes unless you poured a whole bag on your pots and leached it into them zealously. It will over time release potassium silicate in a soluble form for the plant to absorb. It needs to be broken down, discussion for another time.
DE is meant to be kept dry to work against insects, it cuts their exoskeleton.
fungus gnats will be gone with nematodes, use nature against nature.
most man made solutions for pest management are inferior to gaia's solutions. Its a big money game, the pesticide, fungicide industry, and they usually make band-aids, so you keep coming back to cover up the problem, rarely able to fully resolve it properly.
I have a great source for essential oils, their very holistic and edible, so food grade, plants love it, gardens smell like heavens.
