You need to include the civil twilight, if you wish to get a better idea of the effective photoperiod. Civil twilight is the period when the Sun is below the horizon but it is still light enough outside to perform most activities.

Click on the link below and select a city from the drop down box that is close to your latitude. Select the month that you wish to view and tick the 'Civil twilight' box. Click on 'Make Calendar'. Select any day from the calendar and count the time between the lower twilight and the upper twilight. This will give you a good idea of the effective dark period.
