Outdoor Container Growing

So, I have been growing outdoors for the pst 3 years and for several years indoors prior to the financial feasibility diminishing. Since I can only grow six plants legally were I now reside and I lose about a third to caterpillars no matter what I try I need to maximize my potential outdoors as well as the constant intention of growing the best weed. My question is container size?

Previously I had been digging 6 ft diameter hole and amending the existing soil. This grew me some 10 ft trees which yielded 4-5 pounds per plant after the aforementioned losses. Now due to landscaping constraints I need to grow in containers. I want the plants to have all they can use while not wasting money on soil. Last year when I pulled the stalks they didn't seem to use all the room but I've read recommendations to use 8x8 boxes. Any input would be much appreciated!!:thank you:

The bigger the better, if they plants are well cared for the will definitely fill out an 8 x 8 container. Wider gets you more bang for your buck than deeper. Raised beds will actaully do much better than in-ground plants.

Also caterpillars should be very easy to deal with, just spray with a bT type product like Dipel and that should do the trick.
